lewber Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 (edited) I know there are not too many still going in February, but in case anyone still wants to post I'll start a new thread. Day 15 - successes - I am sleeping better - and a lot. Last night 7 1/2 hours straight through and then another 1 1/2 hours. It isn't really leading to any more energy yet, but I feel good. I think my skin looks better and I am definitely less bloated and my face looks less puffy. The food is going ok - I have had plantain chips and chocolate coconut which I guess aren't exactly Whole 30 approved, but I'm ok with that. My diet has improved so much from where I started that I'm not going to get too caught up in that. The fat part is the hardest for me. I don't like olives. I've been trying to put a little extra olive oil after I cook something. I did get guacamole too. I have found I need the fat for satiation. B- grapefruit and walnuts L - Peppers, onions, sausage and kale D- roasted chicken and tomatoes with fresh basil, green beans and potatoes. Edited February 18, 2016 by lewber Quote

It's my new favorite to cook with (and I discovered it because of whole30). To me there is little to no taste when I cook with it, the smoke point is higher, and at our grocery store I can get it in a spray can to use like cooking spray as well as the bottle. Quote
lewber Posted February 16, 2016 Author Posted February 16, 2016 No I haven't tried cooking with it. I ordered some last time I did a Whole 30, but when it came it seemed like it wasn't for cooking so I've been using it as a moisturizer:) are there different types? Quote

I have this one:Pompeian Avocado Oil Non-Stick Cooking Spray https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OCNSK6M/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_7fPWwbJ44XVV3 Although I got it much cheaper at my grocery store. And I bought a bottle like this for when I need larger quantities:La Tourangelle Avocado Oil - Cooking & Body Care - All-Natural, Expeller-pressed, Non-GMO, Kosher - 16.9 Fl. Oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006K3RCPC/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_5hPWwbGS96FF6 I think you can use it for skin care, but I don't. Sorry for the link formatting, I'm on my phone. Quote
lewber Posted February 17, 2016 Author Posted February 17, 2016 I'll try that. I looked at my bottle and it says for moisturizing. Day 17. I would love a bagel and some wine! I had a chicken leg and an apple with almond butter. It is not getting easier. Ha! And I'm hungry. All day yesterday and so far today. Can't find anything satisfying. And it's not a craving. My stomach is growling. I am very busy from now through Saturday. That is helpful. Quote
Pink and Green Mom Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 I'm on Day 44? 45? 46? I have it written down somewhere but not in front of me. I have not lost more than 1 lb. between Day 30 and today. Boo. Yes, I am in it for the weight loss. I do need to start exercising. And yesterday I ate not one, but two spiralized potatotes. But hurray, I can wear clothes I haven't worn in 2 years. Keep on keeping on, everyone! Quote
lewber Posted February 17, 2016 Author Posted February 17, 2016 You are doing awesome!! I do think the weight loss happens at the beginning. I have been weighing myself because honestly that's why I'm in it too. I have not exercised either. I'm hoping when March comes the weather will turn and I'll be able to run again. It's the only real exercise I like to do. I'm trying to stick it out for 30 days. But I'm getting closer to when I gave up last time. Successes- no diet coke, only one glass of wine, no snacking, no processed or fast food. I know that all has to be good for me. I'd just like a little more evidence:) I'm on Day 44? 45? 46? Raifta Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Day 17. I would love a bagel and some wine! Day 17. It is getting more difficult. I think I'm just getting really really bored with thinking: meat, vegetables, fat. Meat, vegetables, fat. And it does help that my parents brought over a dozen assorted bagels from a local bakery. Weight loss all happened at the beginning for me too. I've been exercising some, but no differently than before. However, I am not craving junk food - just something different (maybe oatmeal for breakfast - one of these days, right?). So that's a positive step for me. Oh, and I've been cooking with avocado oil for months now and love it. I use it all the time. 1 Quote

Meat, vegetables, fat. Yep, boredom. I don't even know what I really want. I have eaten well. I guess this is why you're supposed to go 30 days - to truly get into a new groove. And probably why your'e not supposed to weigh yourself - so you're not discouraged at this point when the weight loss stops. 1 Quote
Guest Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I keep looking into Whole 30 but I have to eat low carb due to blood sugar issues. I know I can't stick with a low carb Whole 30 (well, I could if I were single and had no kids). I think I'm really drawn to the idea of making a radical diet change. Quote
StaceyinLA Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I'm on day 10. It's gone ok. My only cheat was a little butter on some lobster tails I broiled for our anniversary and I just can't stress over that. It was grass-fed and I have no guilt. ;-p I'm not really in it for weight loss, but to break my sugar habits again and get back off the junkie carbs. Here's the thing; I WANT to eat the best I can eat and stay the healthiest I can, but I know I cannot do something like paleo for life. I still can't buy into the fact that lots of animal fat is really good for me. I also can't afford grass-fed meat for every meal. Mainly I need a good balance of truly healthy carbs (if I do grains I do only sprouted), some fruit, healthy meats, good fats and lots of veggies. I just need to figure out how to get there and Whole 30 is taming the white flour/sugar beast. 2 Quote

Although I am hoping for slow weight loss, yes, it is more about retraining myself to eat mindfully and healthily. I feel like I need a mindful eating thread to go with the mindful spending thread! Day 18. Today B - eggs with roasted cauliflower, mushrooms, greens and onions L - salad with roast chicken D - chicken noodle soup (without the noodles for me) and potatoes Quote
Pink and Green Mom Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I think this is Day 46. B: pineapple and cashews (yeah, I know) L: egg roll in a bowl (ground pork, 2 c. cabbage slaw, a little coconut aminos and sesame oil all stir fried together) D: shrimp salad (shrimp with chunked avocado, purple onion, shallots, and lime juice over greens) I am starting to work out today (as soon as I post this I swear I will get right up and do it). It has been a few months since I worked out regularly. I will do some sort of weight lifting DVD today. I try to alternate weight lifting days with cardio (mostly step, HIIT, and kickboxing). Quote
lewber Posted February 18, 2016 Author Posted February 18, 2016 (edited) Day 18 - still going somewhat strong. Trying to get more veggies, but I realize I hate to make salads! I almost always eat salads when I go out, but I do not like to make them at home. The only two times I've had salads this month have been off of grocery store salad bars. That will be my goal for next week. B- Super large greens, berries and chia smoothie and 2 chicken legs ( I was starving) L - Clementines and hazelnuts D- Leftover flank steak, roasted cauliflower and green beans Edited- DS wanted Panera for dinner, so I brought my flank steak, some walnuts and my own balsamic dressing and made myself a pretty good salad with an apple on the side. It was nice to have a change of scenery. Edited February 18, 2016 by lewber 1 Quote
JumpyTheFrog Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I started January 1. I haven't lost any weight, although I am feeling better enough (compared to the fall) to do Jazzercise again. I have gone 14 days this month. improvements: less bloated, much less sinus congestion, skin didn't break out during my period, energy improved enough to exercise again, I don't care about baked goods no change: weight, inches (except for being less bloated), sleep cheating: I have maple deli turkey and a protein shake with pea protein and stevia in it. I've also put a small amount of sugar in some marzipan tea. I know these are technically cheats, but it's still much better than falling off the wagon and eating grains again, which I already knew give me trouble. 1 Quote
lewber Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 Day 19 - good and bad news. The bad - I had a glass of wine last night. It was National Wine Drinking Day, I couldn't miss that  But the good news was I didn't snack or eat anything else with the wine, and I still slept well. So another cheat in the books in now what is surely not a technically sound Whole 30. The better good news is I do have more energy today. I actually walked 2 miles this morning. The sun was out and a warm front is passing through. I hope the urge to exercise continues. I would like to get back to running. We are going to be out of town tonight and tomorrow so I am hopeful I can stay on track. I'm taking some food with me and hoping for the best. 1 Quote
Raifta Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 lewber - good luck with the going out of town and bringing food. I had to do that last time I did the Whole30 last June and it did work. We went to Family Camp and I brought all my meals for the whole weekend, which was a bit depressing, because part of the joy of Family Camp is that I don't have to cook or clean and also because I paid for their food as part of my fee, but in the end, I was glad I'd brought my own food and a lot of people were really inspired to start eating better as a result of seeing what I was eating. Day 19. My theory is that if I can survive February and the Whole30 at the same time (really, what was I thinking), I deserve some sort of medal. Same boring things. I actually had eggs for breakfast and eggs for dinner, that's how uninspired I am. Along with random fresh veggies. And leftover curry onion pork for lunch. 1 Quote
lewber Posted February 20, 2016 Author Posted February 20, 2016 Well I ate out with the family. I ordered hamburger with no bun and French fries. They didn't have batter on them so not so bad:) it was all delicious! I'm stuffed. Hopefully I'll get back on track tomorrow. Quote
lewber Posted February 21, 2016 Author Posted February 21, 2016 I'm done! 2 diet cokes and a bagel. Too much cheating to say I'm even close to being part of the program! Not sure what my plan is now. Made some good progress and lost about 6 pounds. Maybe sets of whole 14 with cheat days in between are more my speed. Quote

Made some good progress and lost about 6 pounds. Maybe sets of whole 14 with cheat days in between are more my speed. Well, I'll join you. Also had a bagel. And a sip of DD's drink at the movies yesterday (which was gross, so at least I've sort of set my taste buds in some better direction). I am going to try to really continue to emphasize meats and protein in my diet though and probably only have bread/rice/pasta with one meal per day. And try to pretty much avoid sugary treats, which isn't too hard as I'm not buying them these days and I hate making them. So that will probably only happen if I am going out to someone's house and they offer me something. Between trying to keep up with a more healthful holistic approach to eating and feeling inspired to exercise more, I have been feeling better and hope to continue on this path. Quote
debinindy Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Help! I'm not doing this program per se but I have gone two full weeks with no sugar or grains (mostly just to see if I could do it) and have lost absolutely NO weight. I thought I'd at least lose a few pounds based on my research but no. I am middle aged, I exercise regularly and am proud of myself for cutting the sugar BUT to not even lose a pound is depressing. Any advice? Quote
StaceyinLA Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 (edited) I have definitely lost 4-5 pounds in the days I've been doing the program. I had a fail this weekend though - sushi. I tried to keep it as close to plan as possible by not having anything fried or with sauces, but I did, of course, have sushi rice and I'm sure there was a little soy snuck in there somewhere. I had a pretty good headache last night too, so I'm thinking I am definitely sensitive to something I ate because it's my first headache in a while. Got back on track today - I've had these grass-fed beef weiner/sausage things from Costco that I am obsessed with and I've been dicing potato then sautéing it in olive oil, throwing in the beef links then eating it all with a bunch of Bubbie's sauerkraut (which is a good, fermented one). I could eat it for 3 meals a day right now. Anyway I had it for lunch and again for dinner (had a larabar for breakfast because I was on the road and didn't have time to prepare). I'll likely have a spoonful of raw nut butter as a snack in a couple of hours. I have grass fed ground pork thawing and plan to make a big quiche in the morning with that and some other goodies. Hopefully I can eat on that most of the mornings this week. My biggest "win" so far is really getting myself to where I am enjoying coffee with no sugar, and seeming like I'll likely not want to go back to sugary things. I have had a homemade king cake brought here that I didn't touch and today I was at a baby shower with cake and strawberry shortcake and I sipped on my cold, sugarless coffee throughout (and wasn't feeling like I HAD to have any). Oh, and my water consumption has probably tripled. For that, I am proud. ;-p Edited February 22, 2016 by StaceyinLA Quote
StaceyinLA Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Okay one more post because I've been thinking about all of this so much and I really don't think I'll logistically stick with anything paleo-ish because I still can't totally buy the fact that eating all of the animal proteins are really the best for a truly healthy lifestyle (I guess my past vegetarian ways sneak in). Do y'all feel like it's the fact that we would consume a grain that's a problem, or how we consume it? I think of the diabetic diet where you have a grain with a protein with a fat and it is a balance that doesn't cause sugar spikes and wonder if I eat sprouted grains along with a lean protein and a healthy fat, if that's gonna keep from causing the sugar spikes that are supposedly the issue with inflammation and all that? I mean don't the fats/proteins tone down the carbs in the sprouted grains? I just really need a lifestyle change that I know is doable and I am trying to be realistic. I don't think a truly healthy diet for life would completely eliminate an entire food group, but I do think we need to be talking about REAL food; not processed garbage. Opinions? Quote
