Do you need the solutions manual for Saxon Algebra 1/2?  I noticed the homeschool kit only includes and answer key and it says you have to buy the solutions manual at $45 separately.  This is new to me because up until now the homeschool kits have included the solutions manual.

I doubt you will need it for pre-algebra--it's not that complicated (I mean in terms of steps--you could easily read the lesson and figure out what was suppose to be done).

The solutions manual is different than the answer key.  The answer key only provides the answer.  The solutions manual shows all of the work.

I guess my question would then be, do you need the work shown?  Have most done without the solutions manual and the answer key been enough?

We are doing 8/7 and don't need the work shown.

We did Dolciani pre-alg and didn't need the work shown.

I would say that this depends on your math ability as the teacher.  If you can teach them through problems that they get incorrect, then you may not need it.

It also would depend on how much time you can give to this one subject.  I'm teaching 6 kids this year, so it is a huge time-saver to have all of the work already written out.

You could buy the other books now and then get the solutions manual later if you see that you are having difficulty without it.

We use the Saxon Teacher CDs and plan on getting that too for Algebra 1/2.  In the CDs we have, she shows the work for every problem, if it is the same for Algebra 1/2, I probably won't need the solutions manual.  Anyone use the Teacher CDs?

We just started using the Saxon Teacher this year.  Ds15 is using it for Algebra 2 and it is hugely helpful, so I am not needing to use the solutions manual.

If you have the CDs you probably won't need the solutions manual.
