If you ever wondered if your kids would say this despite having an ENTIRE GROCERY STORE at their disposal...yes. Yes, they would. My 5 year old says this despite the fact that we've actually owned a grocery store since November.  A small grocery store, but a store none the less. She doesn't know what to eat. Every day.

I give my kiddos categories. "You need one protein and one produce." But honestly, they don't often get a lot of say. Since I'm not running a restaurant, they just eat what is put in front of them. I know their preferences, so the one who doesn't like pineapple may be offered a kiwi instead, or I may ask if they want yogurt or cottage cheese. But if they aren't the ones doing the work to prepare the food, they mostly get what is served.

Yep. "Can I have a snack? What should I have?"

Honey, it's a pretty boring place around here, so the choices are the same as yesterday.

It's like they think I have a super awesome snack hiding place, and maybe they can trick me into revealing its location.

That's my 6 year old every snack.every meal.

My 10 year old did it too--but doesn't any more.

What she REALLY means is--I know what I can have, but I really want junk food/something fun, is it possible that if I say that to you you will say--okay, how about ice cream/ a cupcake/ chips/ other food that we don't normally have . . .

I once overheard my son telling my mother that on a day when he was at home alone all day he had walked to the store to buy himself macaroni and cheese because there was no food in the house. Like I had gone off all day and left him with no food. I had to tell her that what he meant was that he didn't want a peanut butter sandwich or oatmeal or cereal or any of the leftovers in the fridge.

You win! Congrats on the store!

So tell her.

This or that.

Don't want it? "Then you are bored, not hungry. Wanna play a game or have me read to you?"

My mom used to say this all the time. "I don't know what I want." "You're bored not hungry. Do you want me to find you something to do?"

My kids do this to me all the time. Just throw me under the bus. "We didn't have lunch today."

Uh, we had a choice of cheese sandwich, turkey sandwich, PB&J, or some combination of those, two kinds of bread, milk or yoghurt, but you wanted a hot dog and it's December and we don't have any. That's not "we didn't have lunch today".

My kid has food amnesia.

He's always forgetting that he ate food if it's grab and go/finger foods. So he regularly forgets fruit, veggies, chips, beef jerky type foods.

Him: "I haven't eaten all day!"

Me: "What to you call x you had at breakfast, or y for a snack? What you really mean is I haven't cooked for you yet today."

He's aware of this and now asks me if he's eaten anything instead of telling everyone his Mom starves him. :D But, he is also the kid who WILL go all day without eating instead of eating something he doesn't like and never say a word. I do need to pay attention to his intake since breakfast and lunch are often "help yourself" meals.

LOL--about lunch--

When we were in Israel, we sometimes got caught up in the touring and such, and we'd realize it was 3pm or so and we hadn't had lunch. We would usually be on the road or just ready to go "home." So several times, we extended the time and ate an early dinner. This was easy for my husband and me, who both have a little extra to live on, IYKWIM, but dd is thin as a rail--so the joke became "they never feed me lunch!"

We've tried to be a little better about it, but sometimes she still asks if we are going to feed her lunch when we are out!

ETA: I should say there was always crackers or little snacks in the car, so she wasn't starving...

That's my kid.  My family regularly reminds of the time where they were watching one of my kids.  He made a comment about "if I'm good my mom will feed me".  My family thought this was funny and so asked him doesn't your mom normally feed you.  His response "But she only feeds me 4 times a day!"
