***** Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 My 16 year old just passed her driver's test. Although we haven't traveled to Canada often, sometimes it is nice to have the option to go for a quick weekend getaway (we live within 2 hours of the border). My question is, is it worth it to get her the enhanced drivers license at this time, since we don't have passports? Or just go with a passport in time...? Any concerns I should know about? Thank you! TrixieB Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 If your child doesn't have a passport, I say go for the EDL. The DMV office gives out little foil envelopes to keep the EDL in, to protect against any unwanted scanning. Quote
***** Posted February 12, 2016 Author Posted February 12, 2016 Its worth it for peace of mind when the teen is on a school or college trip....easier to secure the enhanced than the passport. Concern is difference in drinking age...if teen is going to college near a crossing, some parents want to discourage traveling for partying and not give them a passport or enhanced. Yes, the thought occurred to me that it does make it easier to cross the boarder to drink. There is a college closer to the boarder, if she does end up going there... Quote
