trulycrabby Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 (edited) We toured a local private school today, and had the privilege of speaking with several of the teachers. I asked the algebra teacher which curriculum she used, and she picked up a classic Dolciani Algebra textbook with a publication date in the 1980's. She saw me almost pass out in rapture, and an instant kinship was formed-Math Curriculum Nerds! I thought we only existed on the forum, but I got to meet one in real life!: :hurray: Edited February 11, 2016 by trulycrabby 18 Quote
mom2bee Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Should've asked her if she frequented the boards! If not, we'd love to have her. If so, you'd have a new boardie-based-bestie! 1 Quote
trulycrabby Posted February 11, 2016 Author Posted February 11, 2016 I did tell her about Art of Problem solving, and she hadn't heard about it, so I know she probably isn't a boardie. I didn't want to be impressed by the school, but I was. :o 2 Quote
whitestavern Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 My son's school uses Dolciani as well. I was pleasantly surprised. 2 Quote
Ali in OR Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 That may also be a good sign that she has administrators who let teachers pick the curriculum. And that they don't try to change to the latest teaching fad. 5 Quote
trulycrabby Posted February 12, 2016 Author Posted February 12, 2016 On another note, this private school application process has made me realize that homeschooling is giving ds12 a wonderful education. 1 Quote
AppleGreen Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 On another note, this private school application process has made me realize that homeschooling is giving ds12 a wonderful education. How has the process made you realize that? :bigear: 1 Quote
mamiof5 Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Have never heard of that algebra book, or the art of problem solving. Are they really good? We are not at algebra level yet...but could save the info in case it's needed in the future :) Quote
trulycrabby Posted February 12, 2016 Author Posted February 12, 2016 (edited) How has the process made you realize that? :bigear: Well, the application process has forced me to get my head out of the details of our homeschool day, and to think about the scope and sequence of what we are doing. I am often bogged down in the daily grind of getting things done and and have failed to realize that my child is doing excellent work in most subjects. Edited February 12, 2016 by trulycrabby 3 Quote

We are not at algebra level yet...but could save the info in case it's needed in the future :) In actuality, there are lots of excellent algebra books out there, but Dolciani comes up a lot in math enthusiast threads. Lial, Forrester, the Art of Problem Solving, Saxon, Abeka, and others are all very good. My advice is to enter "Dolciani," "AOPS" and these other names as forum searches, start reading threads, and see which ones interest you. If nothing else, it's some very interesting reading.
