ILiveInFlipFlops Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 So many people rave about this book, so I finally started it yesterday. I'm not very engaged with it, unfortunately. I'm up to the point where the gunslinger meets Jake, and I'm still finding my mind wandering to other things. Does it get more interesting than this? I feel like not much is happening so far, and the lack of detail is making it hard for me to build the story in my head as I go. I tend to gravitate toward books with a lot of rich detail, I think, and so far this feels very...sparse. My attention perked up a little when he told the story about what happened in the first town, but now I'm bored again. What say you? Do I keep pushing on, or do I let it go now and find something else? Will I eventually find myself sucked in? Oh, and this is the revised version, if that makes any difference. Quote
Home'scool Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 If I am remembering correctly The Gunslinger is the first book in the series, correct? I read that one and found it so-so. The next one, The Drawing of the Three, I loved. I then loved the series up through The Wolves of Cala, but lost interest again after that. They went a little too far off the deep end for my tastes. Try them at least through the second one because they do get a lot better. 2 Quote
ErinE Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 The first one was okay. I tried three times before I completed it. There was one moment towards the end of the the book where I thought the plot would veer into a traditional hero's journey and King wrote a surprising (but ultimately correct) choice. The books get better though I wouldn't say the series is one of his best works. Quote
Kristie in Florida Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I had a very hard time getting through it. I had a friend at the time that was obsessed with the series. I couldn't get through the first book. Quote
SJ. Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I read the entire series and highly recommend it. The first book is by far not the best. Keep reading and read book 2 before you decide not to read the rest of the series. King considers the Dark Tower series to be his magnum opus. His genius truly shows when you begin to see how all of his books seem to tie back to the Dark Tower. 2 Quote
Robin M Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I read the whole series and have to agree the first one isn't the best, but sets up quite a bit. Keep plugging away and like SJ said, if you don't get sucked in by book two, then it probably isn't for you. 1 Quote
Reefgazer Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 I absolutely love Stephen King, but this was not his best work, IMO. The first two books in the series are very slow, and I worked to slog through that first one with the expectation that they would get better. The second book was ("The Drawing of the Three") was fantastic, and "Wizard and Glass" was also excellent! But life got in the way and I never got to the rest of the series. I was not impressed with the series and will not chase down the rest of the books, even when I get time. Too many other books that are better to read... Quote
JustEm Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Read the first 2 and then decide if you want to continue. The 2nd one is the book that sucks most people in. The first is hit or miss. Quote
