pink&bluemommy Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 We are moving and my lg front loader is getting yucky. It smelled terrible when I pulled out the used water hose (anyone know what's up with that?). But anyways, the inside has some mold stains and such too (it's almost 8 years old). So I'm pondering a new machine. Any idea of what kind stays the cleanest and maybe water efficient still? 1 Quote
gardenmom5 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I've been very happy with my lg. I had a cheap builders special ge that did well (but hard on clothes.). I will never, ever, ever, you can't pay me to take one - a maytag. (my last machine. was a consumer reports recommended/best buy. . . . . I'm so glad I bought an extended warranty -something I NEVER do .. . I collected. btw: by the time I started having issues with it - CR had it listed as a do not buy. I now take their reviews with a grain of salt.) Quote
Guest Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I have had a front loading LG and a GE - the GE has been so much more hassle free. But I'd trade either front loader for a good old fashioned top loader. The efficiency of the front loaders means I just cannot get enough water to get things really clean, especially my cloth diapers. I've had consistently better results with top loaders and am just waiting until we have space for a Speed Queen :) Quote
Guest Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Speed Queen. I am a believer now. I hope to have only Speed Queens until my dying breath. 3 Quote
Guest Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I should clarify - for normal clothes a front loader usually works but the really dirty bulkies and stinky cloth diapers? A good soak in a top lower works SO much better. Quote

A good soak in a top lower works SO much better. I quit cloth diapers because of my former washing machine. The machine I had when I loved cloth diapering was a very old, non water effficient junker DH salvaged. It had no knobs and I kept a channel lock in the laundry room so I could turn the stub where the knob should have been. :D But man, did that sucker wash some dipes! Quote
Lanny Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 (edited) Your LG is less than 8 years old? My wife went to the superstore and she bought a new Samsung top loader, without the agitator, in November. It is very quiet and I haven't heard her mention any complaints. It replaced our beloved Whirlpool top loader, with an agitator, that will be 21 years old at the end of this month. She wanted one without the agitator, so she could wash sheets and bedspreads and other things, without them getting wrapped around the agitator. I see many people here on WTM who are very happy with Speed Queens. The best machine for you will be one that you are happy with, for many more years than just 8 years. GL with your choice! Stratford Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I have had a Fisher Paykel Aquasmart for the last 3 or 4 years and I love it. It's an HE toploader. There's a button you can push to use the conventional (lots of water) setting, so it's like having the best of both worlds. Gets everything clean, clean, clean. No issues thus far, I'd buy another in a heartbeat. Quote
TammyS Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 My dream in life is to find an old (70s) washing machine with a lint filter on the agitator. Does anyone remember those? Lemme tell ya, when you hang dry most of your clothes, you get really sick of these new washers that don't remove lint decently (because these days everyone uses a dryer and expects the dryer to catch the lint). Anyway, if your machine is just stinky I would run a couple of cycles of cold bleach water through it (yes, cold, hot just makes the chlorine evaporate), rather than replace it. 1 Quote
Ottakee Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I lile.y basic mid range speed queen top loader. Only a few cycles but my clothes are CLEAN. 1 Quote

I had another problem with mine over the weekend and I need to get serious about looking. I told dh I want a Speed Queen, but I don't know which one. Quote
Mom-ninja. Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Speed Queen? Will this be one of those items I learn from the Hive that I have to have? 4 Quote

We just have cheap, apartment provided laundry machines at the moment. If I had to replace the FP, I'd get another or a Speed Queen due to all the awesome reviews for SQ here at WTM. :) Quote

I told dh I want a Speed Queen, but I don't know which one. I have the mid-range one. I can get the actual number if you want, but there were three choices; bare bones, middle, and highest features. I did not need all the cycles of the highest choice. Quote
MotherGoose Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I have a whirlpool front loader. We have had trouble with the gaskets. Next time, I will g et a top loader. But I like whirlpool. Quote
Guest Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Speed Queen? Will this be one of those items I learn from the Hive that I have to have? Yes, which is where I learned about the Speed Queen. When my washe broke last year, the appliance repair man told me I would be happiest with a Speed Queen, which I had heard on here. It is a commercial-style, no frills, top-loadeing machine. The problem with many of today's machines, especially high efficiency, is that they conserve water too aggressively. It takes water to clean clothes well and gently! I never learned this better than when I was washing cloth diapers. Diapers, obviously, absorb a lot of water, and if the washer doesn't use enough, there will literally be no extra water in the machine. Clothes don't get clean that way. 1 Quote
pink&bluemommy Posted February 11, 2016 Author Posted February 11, 2016 I'm feeling a little happier with my machine this morning. The smell really was from the house dirty water line. It's all packed up now and ready to move. I'll try the bleach on cold - I always do hot with bleach! 1 Quote
magnificent_baby Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Speed Queen? Will this be one of those items I learn from the Hive that I have to have? I told my mom about this brand after reading about it here, she loves hers. A year later she is STILL raving about how much she loves her Speed Queen! On the other hand I have a 3 or 4 year old LG that has been absolutely terrible. I would love to get a Speed Queen but I really like being able to wash my huge king size comforter at home so I'm torn. Quote

I saw that there were only the three choices and wondered if I had to go to the top to get a good one (and hoped I didn't). Quote
Lanny Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 OP I mentioned your thread to my wife when we were eating Breakfast. I told her that I'd written that I haven't heard any complaints from her, about the Samsung washing machine she bought in November. She said it is "perfecta" (Spanish for perfect). She bought one with large capacity and upscale. At today's exchange rate, I think it was approximately USD $600 or 650. Prices here include 16% tax. GL with whatever you buy! She said it has a 10 year warranty on the motor, but the most expensive component of one of those machines is the Digital Electronic Panel and I believe the warranty on that is 5 years, but don't have that data in front of me. After it was delivered it to our house, we called Samsung and they sent a man to "install" it. We bought a Protective Device, that plugs into the wall, and the washing ,machine plugs into that. Hopefully if there are any electrical surges, the washing machine will not receive them. Sort of a surge protector, but possibly more advanced... Quote
Lady Florida. Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Speed Queen? Will this be one of those items I learn from the Hive that I have to have? The Hive is where I learned it. Apparently, as Quill pointed out, today's machines don't agitate like yesterday's did. This means clothes don't get as clean. Speed Queen is the only company that still makes a true agitator machine. 1 Quote
DawnM Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 My W/D are older than yours. I think my washer is 13-14 years old. I know we moved it to NC when we left CA 11 years ago and I had it for 2-3 years in CA before we moved. It is a Kenmore Elite H3. Anyway, I am hoping the buyers of our house in the Spring want to keep them and we won't have to move them.....I may even put it in the listing. I want new! Although I don't need them. I am wanting to get Speed Queen if possible. Quote

Lady Florida. Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I thought they also had a non-agitating machine? They might, I don't know. Since I want an old-fashioned agitator I haven't paid attention to what else they offer. Quote
LuvToRead Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I bought a Speed Queen last year, and love it. I think mine is the mid range top loader too. DH's work clothes get dirty, and I am thrilled how well the Speed Queen works. 2 Quote
loulou belle Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Another vote for the Speed Queen. I bought if based on recommendations from the Hive. I love that machine. Diapers, barn clothes, workout clothes, garage clothes -- They all come out clean. And the wash cycle is about 30 minutes. 1 Quote
Kathryn Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 How much is the mid-range top loader Speed Queen? Quote
BusyMom5 Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 My 8 year old one is on it's last leg- something is out on it and it clunks terribly, the repairman said it was too $$ to fix, so we started looking around. I'm planning to get a Speed Queen. I heard about it on another board, but it's great to hear more reviews here! Quote
Guest Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 (edited) How much is the mid-range top loader Speed Queen?A little over $900 installed. You have to obtain it through an apliance person, I believe. We had a small discount because the repair man had already been to my house. ETA: looking at my receipt - washer was $848.00. Service allowance was -$20. Delivery, install and haul away of broken washer was $49. Tax was $49.68. Total: $926.68. Edited February 12, 2016 by Quill Quote
KungFuPanda Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Speed Queen. I am a believer now. I hope to have only Speed Queens until my dying breath. Same here. Top Loader. No frills. Just CLEAN clothes fast. 2 Quote
KungFuPanda Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 How much is the mid-range top loader Speed Queen? If it helps, the bottom of the line speed queen is just as good as the rest. Same motor, just fewer cycle choices. 1 Quote
