I know that someone here will be able to help me out.  I would love to find some good quality layering type clothes.  Sleeveless or short sleeve shirts to wear under cardigans.  Long sleeve shirts.  Leggings.  Solid colors.  I'm having no luck in my searches.  Ugh.

Help!

ann taylor has some lovely shells for layering.  http://www.anntaylor.com/blouses-and-tops/cata000010/?SortByFacetSelectedValue=remove&DocSortOrder=remove&format=json&catid=cata000010&question=&fRequest=true&goToPage=2&N=0&categoryType=regular&priceSort=DESC&country=&currency=&Submit=Submit

They have their leggings on clearance right now ($29.50), but I haven't worn them.

I'd also look at Loft.

I buy a lot from Target, just because my dd is señorita sticky fingers and I'm not working professionally right now.

For what? Hiking clothes would be different than church clothes, even though you probably want to layer both ykwim?

Target and Old Navy have solid tanks and tees that are decent for layering. Old Navy's tanks are long and soft.

Check Eddie Bauer too. I've gotten solids there in the recent past.

I'd be happy to help, but I need more information.  What's your style?  What are you planning on wearing these clothes to?  What are the your colors you primarily wear?  What is your budget?  What sort of brands and fabrics do you typically wear?  Are we buying these for daily wear, or for a one time experience?

Yep, I love Old Navy tanks for layering. I'm tall, so the extra length is wonderful. They're very inexpensive, too. I almost always wear them backwards for more coverage in the front. (Their tags are printed on rather than sewn in. You can see the writing through the light colored tanks, but not through the dark ones.)

More information.  My look is usually a casual dress or skirt with a sweater or scarf.  Comfortable is my preference and I tend to wear a lot of cotton knit because I'm about 20 lbs overweight and things just feel better if they have a bit of stretch.  I like jewel tones, black, and red.  I hardly ever buy clothes so I don't mind spending a bit on the high end for shirts particularly if they'll last for awhile.

I tend to wear a lot of Lands End dresses and skirts.  I love Talbots but haven't purchased anything from there in awhile.  I have a few J Crew dresses and skirts I loves also.

I would like them to be daily wear.  Really I'm picturing them as something I can wear under open sweaters or with a scarf to go with skirts.

I buy cynthia Rowley long and short layering t's. I can usually find them at tjmaxx for like 7-10 dollars. I love them. Just enough stretch to smooth the lines. No bagging as the day wears on.

I buy most of my layering outfits at the Gap or Old Navy, depending on how many rewards I have, but I have also had luck at Target. Can you tell us why the old standbys like Target, Ann Taylor, Talbots or JCP would not work for you? Maybe that would help us window shoppers narrow it down a bit.

I have a similar aesthetic, but perhaps different colors.

If you're wearing leggings under dresses, they don't need to be super opaque, they just need to be warm.  Go to Walmart or Target.  They have tons of leggings for cheap.  I've even seen fleece lined jewel tone leggings at Walgreens that I found comfortable.  I've found high end leggings more likely to snag and need replacement faster, so I don't recommend expensive ones for that, unless you're trying to show off in lululemon. They do have cute little jackets.

J Crew is usually high enough quality that you can buy secondhand.  I've frequently seen their dresses on eBay.  If you want dark colors, red, or jewel tones they're going to be easier to find on sale or secondhand at this time of year, because the resort & spring clothes are out.  The best time to shop for that palette is late summer or early fall. Some websites don't index the clearance results, so check the clearance and sale sections of websites separately.

Here's some layering t's:  http://www.downeastbasics.com/collections/tees-camis

You can also check J Jill, Boden, Talbots, Anthropologie, Garnet Hill, LL Bean, Brooks Brothers, and Vineyard Vines, as well as the same brands on ebay.

Polyvore has an interesting shopping feature, though they changed the color choices to be less specific about a year ago, which I found annoying.

This is flattering: Eddie Bauer twist tank

Whoa crazy link. Search twist v-neck on the site if it doesn't work.

Not the OP, but those are super cute. I am going to order one. I live in Atlanta and am always looking for something more interesting and more flattering than a plain tee for summer. Thanks!
