ProudGrandma Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I am using North Star for my daughter...and although it's not bad...we don't really like it either. So I am curious as to what other good options are out there...or if I even really need to do it. thanks. 1 Quote
ProudGrandma Posted February 9, 2016 Author Posted February 9, 2016 should I maybe assume because of the lack of responses is telling me that high school geography is not needed? thanks. Quote
desiree77 Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I'm waiting responses because I was planning to use North Star next year for my son. What didn't you like about it? Quote
cbollin Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Where I live geography is an option for public school students, but not required. So if it is missing, the state universities don't care as long as US history, world history and usually one other "social studies" (gov't/econ) is there. Also, where I live we have these cover schools for homeschooling. The 4 top popular ones in my area do not require it for graduation, but do allow it as high school. My youngest is not regular needs high school so I can be more flexible than other people. Because I have it on the shelf from previous use, we're using unit study approach with mfw's ecc mixed with worksheets from geography matters to build a semester course for high school for her 9th grade year. It may be a lighter course than most use around here. But that's what we're doing and why. 1 Quote
theelfqueen Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 We're planning to do Geography next year but that is the extent of the "Plan" ;) at this point. I'm doing some research on books and spines but really want to homebrew it. I'm a Social Studies teacher by background so I feel adequate to the task. He did Government / is doing Economics this year in 9th. We'll do World Geography next year in 10th, Then World History in 11th and American history in 12th. Quote
AmyontheFarm Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 We used Runkle's Physical Geography for a world geography credit and now we are using Contact Canada for a required Canadian geography credit. Quote

Julie of KY Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I use Runkle's Physical Geography and give it 1/2 credit. Quote
Murrayshire Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 (edited) We are using the Geography text from Oak Meadow....got it for $8 on Amazon! I ordered an inexpensive teacher guide & Student Syllabus from Oak Meadow and she is using the book list from Build Your Library for Literature....http://buildyourlibrary.com/multi-grade-teaching-an-example/#comment-413 (She was taking the Online Literature class through Virtual Homeschool Group, but with her English class at Co-op....it was becoming too much writing.) Dd is also notebooking through Geography instead of the projects in the Oak Meadow syllabus. (She completes her OM reading assignments with note-taking & answering the questions in student syllabus.) She is using a mix of BYL & Geo Scribe notebooking pages. Along with her notebooking, she is watching Globe Trekker videos, current events, cooking, and art projects with siblings. It's been great so far! She is also taking a mapping class through co-op which lines up nicely with Oak Meadow scope and sequence. http://www.fablevisionlearning.com/mapping-the-world-by-heart/ You can see a couple pictures here of some notebook work...post #10 http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/581870-9th-grade-geography-course-help/ Edited February 10, 2016 by Murrayshire Quote
Loesje22000 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 We use IGCSE Geography this year. IGCSE Global perspectives next year. And something for space & earth topics during grade 11/12 Quote
Hilltopmom Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 There's a human geography AP class, that's the extent of my geography for high school knowledge:) We just covered it with world & us history, nothing separate. My next to high school kiddo has LDs & I plan to do Geography with her (instead of in depth world history) using AGS hi LO materials from a special needs supply company, that still have on my shelves from my high school spec Ed teacher days. Heather in VA Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I noticed that the Well-Trained Mind Academy is going to have a Geography course for late middle school/early high school next year. Quote
Guest hopeingrace Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I use BJU Cultural Geography Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
ProudGrandma Posted February 11, 2016 Author Posted February 11, 2016 thank you everybody who replied. I thought I had "followed" this thread and I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed that there were 12 replies, when I thought there were none. So thanks. I am eager to check out the options listed. can some one give me a link to the WTM geography (if there is one yet)...how did you find out about this? thanks. Quote
Heather in VA Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Here's a link to the WTM academy class. It says 7 - 9th grade http://www.wtmacademy.com/courses/electives/geography-middle-school/ Quote
bugs Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 My ds used BJU's Cultural Geography in 9th grade, and I supplemented it with The Usborne Book of World Religions. He is a senior now full-time at the community college, and the program he is in has him taking Cultural Geography. Quote
Closeacademy Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 We did geography last year but it's my daughter's big interest so she is continuing her studies on her own. We took a different path and I started with travel guides but then she discovered books in the children section from a series entitled "Enchantment of the World" and they have a title for most countries. They are at a decent level of depth of reading, including maps, history, etc. She also spends a lot of time on youtube listing to the various languages from different countries. So we basically unschooled it and let her follow her interests rather than any sort of textbook. Quote
TarynB Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 We're going to do at least a half credit of world geography for 9th grade. If DS gets absorbed by it and wants to spend more time we'll add enough to make a full credit. We're going to start with the text Geography Alive for a spine (DS chose it from several text options), videos from The Great Courses' Cultural & Human Geography (http://www.thegreatcourses.com/courses/understanding-cultural-and-human-geography.html), Georgia Virtual Learning (http://www.gavirtuallearning.org/Resources/SharedWorldGeorgraphy.aspx), and Annenberg (http://www.learner.org/series/powerofplace/), and notebooking. I'm looking at using the Geo Scribe notebooking package (http://www.historyscribe.com/hs-geoscribe.htm). DS has never used the notebooking method before, but he's open to trying it, and I think he might enjoy applying his art skills that way. And we'll add in essays or brief research papers every few weeks for each major topic/region. The Great Courses' course guidebook has some good prompts for those. 2 Quote
cbollin Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 if you plan on GeoScribe.... . double check prices from the website to those of Currclick. might save a few dollars even if it's not that expensive in the first place. oh yeah, I forgot I bought that about 7 years ago.... still on my computer. I used them then, and can use it again. awesome! happy me! 1 Quote
TarynB Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 (edited) OP, since you're wondering if you even need to do geography, I just wanted to add to my earlier post that we're doing it partly because DS just wants to, and partly because one of the universities on my DS's radar specifically suggests it. Our state does not require it for high school and our local high school school doesn't require it for their students either. (The particular univ. DS is interested in is out-of-state to us and suggests these 4 social studies credits: 1 in world history, 1 in world geography, 1 in US history since Reconstruction, .5 in US Gov't, and .5 in economics.) Shellydon Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 We are going to cover geography this summer. It is a required course in public school, so all the universities look for it on transcripts. I haven't decided what we'll use yet, but I am looking at Great Courses to see if they have something. Quote

So we basically unschooled it and let her follow her interests rather than any sort of textbook. This is similar to what we did. Map placements at the dinner table years ago, esp. from Rainbow Resource, which we continue somewhat today fostered interest. Lonely Planet travel guides have nice background on countries (e.g., at library or limited info. free on their web site) are very good, although DS hasn't read many. He does read a tremendous amount about physical, cultural, and human geography on the internet in his free time. We don't cover "geography" as a class since I think it would "spoil it" for him. We do cover history, however, as a class, and it does involve a little bit of geography along the way. The Great Courses class "Understanding Cultural and Human Geography," mentioned elsewhere, looks like a good one for high school. 1 Quote
Momto6inIN Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Oldest DS hasn't really done Geography as a high school course per se, but once a week I have him do some http://www.seterra.net/ and it really does seem to stick. When we watch CNN or talk about places in the news, he almost always remembers where it is. :) 3 Quote
