My twelve month old is obsessed with fish oil capsules--seriously, the rest of us were sitting around eating Girl Scout cookies and she rejected the cookies and demanded fish oil capsules instead.

I know, she is a really weird kid.

So my question is, are there dangers to too many fish oil capsules?

File this under "questions I never thought I would have to ask"...

I eat one or two tins or sardines each day. Yes, you *can* have too much oily fish and their derivatives, but it's difficult to do. Two or three fish oil capsules per day wouldn't be a level I'd worry about for a baby. My little guy loves fish oil too.

Does she respond the same way to fish?  Sardines, anchovies, pickled herring?  I'd rather a baby snack on fatty fish than on purified oil.  And yes, blood clotting issues.  But I bet it would be much more difficult to overeat the food than the supplement.

Brain food. I wouldn't let her have more than one or two, and I would be sure to ask the pediatrician about it.

DS12 LOVES cooked salmon skin. He strips them from all of our portions and devours 4-5 at one sitting. :ack2: So, maybe give her a few of them to try.

I had to stop giving my kids fish oil because it caused them to get nosebleeds.  So no, I wouldn't let them eat it like candy.  :)  Nosebleeds may not be life-threatening, but they are absolutely no fun.

whats the source?  how many mgs?

you can get her the fish oil gummies (which have very little fish oil in them that dudeling's ND considers them a waste of money if you're goal is to get fish oil in a kid.) - maybe she'll like those.  or gummy worms, or gummy bears, etc.

btw: dudling was on 1250mg of fish oil under his ND's direction by the time he was five.

I also read an interesting article recently that boys need 3 -4 times as much essential fatty acids (fish oil is one source) as girls for brain development.

Yes, vitamin A toxicity can be caused in children getting fish oil supplements.

I think this is a problem with cod liver oil but not regular fish oil?
