I thought calling your child the wrong name was exclusive to mothers, however my very intelligent husband just called one of our children the name of another child.

My husband and I often call our son by the dog's name.   I'd say we're about equal in doing that.  I never thought it was restricted to moms.  My dad called me by my sister's name a lot.  :-)

Oh no, my dad was definitely worse!

My younger sister used to whine about how rejected she felt having the first syllable of my name attached to her name, LOL. I assured her he did the opposite to me. Then this week she dropped her stepson off at school and called him by the dog's name!

erma bombeck wrote a great column on this.  she'd listen to her mother yell for her to come home.  her mother would go through *her* sisters names, other female relative names, then demand to know why erma wouldn't come home. . . . when you get my name right.

I've only been called the wrong name by one relative, my paternal grandmother.  Note, grandma had one son (married once), one daughter (never married or dated), one sister (she disliked) and one grandchild, so it wasn't like there was a lot of names to choice from.  She'd say, in order

  1. her only daughter's name
  2. her favorite dog's name even after the dog was dead.
  3. my mother's name,
  4. My name

I strongly suspect that was in her order of preference.   She disliked her sister and didn't use her name if she could help it, otherwise she probably would have been in there.

My MIL called me the wrong name when I first met her, but we met on accident very soon after DH and I started to date and MIL loved the previous girl.  She called me some random name, so no hurt, just something to tease her about.

I definitely call my boys by the wrong name from time to time. Its only 2 of them, but they each have a variety of nicknames based on their actual names. I might call my youngest by his brothers 4 nicknames, middlename and first name before eventually using one of his actual monikers.

My grandpa was notorious for mixing up names.

Apparently I have inherited the trait from him. My kids have about a 50% chance of hearing the correct name come out of my mouth when I am addressing or referring to them.

why would it be something only mothers did?  Or do you mean that so far it has only been something you have done in your family?

Around here it is 50-50.

DH grew up being called the dogs name, lol.

I do that all the time! Dh is more prone to calling the dc by the dogs' names.

 I'm not sure why I think that is so funny, but it keeps making me giggle.

Once when we were crossing the border from Canada into the U.S. and Customs/Immigrations asked my husband how many children we have (we were all in the car together), my very intelligent husband couldn't remember.  That was a little awkward!

lol! Well, in our house, it's just been me. And I've only heard other moms do it or discuss it, so I assumed it was just a mom-thing. Apparently I've been wrong all these years :D

Two of my besties in high school, D (male, one syllable) and K (female, two syllables) answered to my dog's names. In my defense, our dogs names were D, male one syllable and K, female two syllables. Edited by fraidycat

My dad was so bad that he eventually gave up on our names and called us by birth order (I was called number 2). I've gotten better over the years, but still slip up from time to time. My kids have learned that if I'm looking at them, they better respond. There was at one point that my oldest twin and youngest child had the same haircut and similar size that if they weren't together, I couldn't tell them apart from the back (older is a little taller so who is who is easier together).

I'm Katie, my sister is Kelly. My mo usually just called us both "ka....ly" as she tried to get the name right. So my sister named her kid Kaley in honor of that. :)

Yes, dads are just as susceptible as moms. It doesn't matter if the genders match, either. My father did it frequently with my brother and me. He'd often catch himself halfway through - "Ste, uh Kathy" "Kat, uh Steven". When you only have one, you will mix their names up with the pets. Dh mixes ds and dss up all the time. I often mix up ds and the dog (they start with the same letter), and occasionally ds and dss.

Interesting. In our home, it's the opposite. DH always uses the wrong name; I've mixed up names for the children only a handful of times in their lives.
