Tohru Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 I thought calling your child the wrong name was exclusive to mothers, however my very intelligent husband just called one of our children the name of another child. 8 Quote
Kerileanne99 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Was it the name of another one of your children, lol? 2 Quote
marbel Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 My husband and I often call our son by the dog's name. I'd say we're about equal in doing that. I never thought it was restricted to moms. My dad called me by my sister's name a lot. :-) 5 Quote
AndyJoy Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Oh no, my dad was definitely worse! My younger sister used to whine about how rejected she felt having the first syllable of my name attached to her name, LOL. I assured her he did the opposite to me. Then this week she dropped her stepson off at school and called him by the dog's name! 1 Quote
gardenmom5 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 that's nothing. 1ds . . . . called dudeling, by 1ds's name . . . . yep - his own name . . . . 4 Quote
gardenmom5 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 erma bombeck wrote a great column on this. she'd listen to her mother yell for her to come home. her mother would go through *her* sisters names, other female relative names, then demand to know why erma wouldn't come home. . . . when you get my name right. 2 Quote
Tohru Posted February 2, 2016 Author Posted February 2, 2016 He's always grins and stifles a laugh when I've gotten it wrong. So excited that it happened to him. lol! 4 Quote
shawthorne44 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 I've only been called the wrong name by one relative, my paternal grandmother. Note, grandma had one son (married once), one daughter (never married or dated), one sister (she disliked) and one grandchild, so it wasn't like there was a lot of names to choice from. She'd say, in order her only daughter's name her favorite dog's name even after the dog was dead. my mother's name, My name I strongly suspect that was in her order of preference. She disliked her sister and didn't use her name if she could help it, otherwise she probably would have been in there. My MIL called me the wrong name when I first met her, but we met on accident very soon after DH and I started to date and MIL loved the previous girl. She called me some random name, so no hurt, just something to tease her about. 1 Quote
Gil Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 I definitely call my boys by the wrong name from time to time. Its only 2 of them, but they each have a variety of nicknames based on their actual names. I might call my youngest by his brothers 4 nicknames, middlename and first name before eventually using one of his actual monikers. 1 Quote
maize Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 My grandpa was notorious for mixing up names. Apparently I have inherited the trait from him. My kids have about a 50% chance of hearing the correct name come out of my mouth when I am addressing or referring to them. 2 Quote
Julie Smith Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 After talking to his sister, my husband then spends the next few hours to days calling my by his sisters name. 1 Quote
redsquirrel Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 why would it be something only mothers did? Or do you mean that so far it has only been something you have done in your family? Around here it is 50-50. DH grew up being called the dogs name, lol. 1 Quote
Tohru Posted February 2, 2016 Author Posted February 2, 2016 I do that all the time! Dh is more prone to calling the dc by the dogs' names. I'm not sure why I think that is so funny, but it keeps making me giggle. Quote
J-rap Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Once when we were crossing the border from Canada into the U.S. and Customs/Immigrations asked my husband how many children we have (we were all in the car together), my very intelligent husband couldn't remember. That was a little awkward! 3 Quote

And I've only heard other moms do it or discuss it, so I assumed it was just a mom-thing. Apparently I've been wrong all these years :D Quote
fraidycat Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 (edited) I'm not sure why I think that is so funny, but it keeps making me giggle. Two of my besties in high school, D (male, one syllable) and K (female, two syllables) answered to my dog's names. In my defense, our dogs names were D, male one syllable and K, female two syllables. heartlikealion Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 I think my parents did that last time I visited lol I called ds dh's name this week. I realized it immediately but it just came out. 1 Quote
jenn- Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 My dad was so bad that he eventually gave up on our names and called us by birth order (I was called number 2). I've gotten better over the years, but still slip up from time to time. My kids have learned that if I'm looking at them, they better respond. There was at one point that my oldest twin and youngest child had the same haircut and similar size that if they weren't together, I couldn't tell them apart from the back (older is a little taller so who is who is easier together). 1 Quote
ktgrok Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 I'm Katie, my sister is Kelly. My mo usually just called us both "ka....ly" as she tried to get the name right. So my sister named her kid Kaley in honor of that. :) 2 Quote
TravelingChris Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 THe other day my son called and I thought it was his sister. I had picked up one of our non caller id phones and couldn't hear that well. THat was the first time I had ever made that mistake. Quote
Lady Florida. Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 (edited) Yes, dads are just as susceptible as moms. It doesn't matter if the genders match, either. My father did it frequently with my brother and me. He'd often catch himself halfway through - "Ste, uh Kathy" "Kat, uh Steven". When you only have one, you will mix their names up with the pets. Dh mixes ds and dss up all the time. I often mix up ds and the dog (they start with the same letter), and occasionally ds and dss. Edited February 2, 2016 by Lady Florida Quote

In our home, it's the opposite. DH always uses the wrong name; I've mixed up names for the children only a handful of times in their lives. Quote
stephanier.1765 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 I finally end with "oh, you know who you are!" Both dh and I do it here too. Funny though, I never call the pets by the wrong names. Quote
