Nemom
Thinking about making some life changes and this is something I am considering. I haven't been able to find a lot of information available online. Anyone have any experience with this? TIA
bethben
I don't foster disabled adults, but I do have a son who is significantly disabled (he's almost 17, so he's very adult like in size). So, I don't know anything about foster care, but if you want to know about some issues you may face with disabled adults, I could help possibly. Message me if interested. JFSinIL
Your local social service agencies may have info on how to train to become an aide for a disabled adult. My adulkt son (Joe is 24) has an aide who takes him places a few times a week, she has been background checked and trained by Clearbrook, largest provider in Illinois. That might be a way to get your toes in the water, so to speak. He also attends a day program three times a week run by a different agency. I know they also serve as Rep Payees (handling SSI monies) for some of the older clients who no longer have family close by or living to help. Ottakee
Do you live near public transportation or an "on call" bus/van for transportation? Are you handicapped accessible? Do you want clients that can be left home alone or are you planning for 24 hour/7 days a week of care? Are you thinking just 1 or 2 or more like 6-8 in a group home setting? Do you have reliable back up care givers for emergencies/vacations, etc? I have 3 special needs kids, 2 of which would likely qualify for adult foster care. There are so many different types of adult foster homes. We have contemplated opening up one of our bedrooms for this for a higher functioning young adult but we don't have public transportation so it would mean even MORE driving for me. We would also need to have someone whose care plan specifically said they can be left home alone for several hours at a time.
