Happy2BaMom
Ds, 7th grade, is working his way through AG. We completed Year 1 last year and it went fairly well. This year has been tougher, mostly because we are in phrases. While I like AG, I am a little frustrated by the phrases section(s) - both with the speed with which phrases are covered and how quickly the difficulty is ramped up in the exercises. Ds definitely needs more practice than what is in the Student workbook. I tried using MCT's Grammar Voyage, but the sentences in there are less complex than what AG uses, so it only helped a little. Does anyone know of any resources (book, online or otherwise) where we can get more sample sentences (featuring phrases) to work through? (Note: I need to have answers for the diagramming, as I am finding diagramming phrases to be a little confusing as well, so I can't just pull any old sentence off the internet & then start teaching it.) TIA (hopefully).
raganfamily
If you have the review and reinforcement, you can use this for extra practice. I have used AG with three kids. They each had some difficulty with the diagramming. I didn't take any points off for the diagramming. I had them diagram a few sentences and then we went over the answers together. I hope this helps. Happy2BaMom
Oh, thanks for the reminder on the R&R book! I had forgotten about that. I will look into it.
thegeyser
I have often thought that I may use my Killgallon (spelling?) Sentence Composing book for review after Analytical Grammar. My thought was that we could check our work with that grammar web site that will diagram sentences for you. Just a thought.
yvonne
Rod and Staff book 6 or 7. You could get just the Teacher's Manual, which includes all the student text w/ answers, and dictate or write out the sentences you want your student to do. The student text isn't that expensive, though. You could also just get the Manual & the workbook that has additional exercises to supplement the text and have your student do the relevant pages. Answers to the workbook are in the Teacher's Manual, so you'd also have R&S's explanation of the topic, for a different angle on difficult sections. KAM
We have the same exact issue, same age here. And I only "get it" because I have the answers! But I am choosing to just not worry about him understanding it perfectly - we will use the review books every other week or so and address confusion as it comes up. I figure he has years ahead for it to sink in.
