RosieCotton
I thought I had bookmarked a thread about this, but I did not. Someone had mentioned a clear plastic covering they had used for this -- I think from Walmart? What can I use that's not permanent, that will stand up to obviously kids playing on, writing on, and of course then eating on the dining room table?? I'm assuming I'll just tape it underneath somehow. There will be maps and other things to view thru it, so it has to be clear.
Freedom
I got mine from Walmart and it works for all of the above! It's thick, clear, and inexpensive.
Squawky Acres
We have a very nice handcrafted-by-a-local-artist-before-we-had-kids-and-knew-better dining room table. I had actually posted a thread about it on the chat boards, and went with a recommendation to have a plexiglass cover cut by a glass shop. It was inexpensive, durable, and looks fairly nice. Plexiglass does scratch more than glass, so it is certainly scratched, but it still looks fine and I feel it is safer with young children around.
Miss Tick
You can also buy vinyl by the yard from a fabric store. Usually they have a few different thicknesses. In fact, I seem to remember some patterned versions in addition to clear. Might not be cheaper than Wal-Mart, though.
fdrinca
We had thick vinyl from the craft store on our table, but it kept moving around and driving us crazy as it would shift the items under the tablecloth. I think a piece of Plexiglas would be perfect for the job.
Squawky Acres
I just found the link to the thread. I don't know if this is the one you had bookmarked. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/540804-protection-for-the-homeschool-table/?hl=%2Bplexiglass&do=findComment&comment=6185488
