When do you stop formal grammar study?

We are slowly working our way through grammar. This child is my 6th grader. He is not really making mistakes. Sometimes, I wonder if I am wasting our time on this. He does make mistakes, but it is usually in the reading of instructions. We just started a new book so I figure we will go in to early 7th grade on it. But sometimes, I wonder if I should just put it to the side and let him write papers and forget the grammar portion. I don't know. Maybe I am just being lazy.

I always heard to hit grammar hard three times in a child's school career, usually around 3rd, 6th, and 9th (just guidelines, you can do it however you like). But I see most parents doing it yearly, so I wonder this too.
