XPOSTED - Two things - Chemistry needs and Landry Chemistry teacher recommendation

Recommended Posts

Two things - I am on the fence about chemistry for my daughter who may pursue a dental assistant type path and may need more chemistry in college. (She took Chemistry via Chemistry 101 DVDs, The Elements, and Carbon Chemistry and a Landry Chemistry Intensive)  If she did that, does she need more to continue into chemistry in college or has she had enough for high school?

And if so, she would take chemistry online with Landry Academy.  She is currently taking biology and a literature class with them, so the format isn't an issue.  My son took several science classes through Landry, and I know the teachers have different styles and are better suited for some students.  My son and my daughter have both now taken biology through Landry but had different teachers and I can see differences.  Not bad, both really liked their courses and teachers, but I know chemistry is challenging.  We are familiar with one teacher and have no complaints, but I see there are others.  I wondered if anyone had taken chemistry on Landry and could recommend a teacher?

Yes.  Just standard chemistry.  I just don't know if what she's already done is enough and if taking a Landry chemistry is overkill?  I don't want to do Advanced.  I would choose a different science course.  She's done physical science, the above chemistry, and Landry biology.  She will be in 11th grade.

My daughter is taking chemistry with Landry Academy this year. She has Mrs. Prieskorn. I can recommend the class highly. Mrs. Prieskorn sends weekly emails to the students to introduce the new week's subject. She focuses on helping her students learn the material. One example of this: she gives the students the opportunity to improve their test scores by fixing the answers on their tests for a percentage of the full amount. To do this, the student has to give not only their answers, but also the proof and work for their answers (proof of an answer can be the page number of the text). She posts solutions to homework problems on the class page for students who need them. She encourages students to read about science in the news. Every week, she highlights two or three recent science articles. The students are not required to read them, but they are given the opportunity to earn a small amount of extra credit if they read and summarize one article per week.

My daughter had Mr. Leingang for pre-chemistry a couple of years ago. She enjoyed the class. In fact, she will probably take his forensic anatomy course this fall. I don't have any specifics, though, about his chemistry course.

Hope this helps a little. It can be so hard to decide.

My daughter is also taking Chemistry at Landry Academy with Mrs. Prieskorn this year, and I would highly recommend her as a teacher.  Recently, my daughter had difficulty with a particular topic.  She emailed Mrs. Prieskorn who responded promptly with detailed information to get her back on track.  In addition, Mrs. P offered to work with her via email or during the weekly office hour if she needed additional help.
