We're currently using R & S 4 and it's a wee bit too hard for him.(I put him in 4 because he's a phenomenal speller after doing AAS 1-5 and finishing last year).  I like Rod and Staff but I heard the 3rd grade is more phonetic work which he does not need.

I thought I'd shelve the last 1/2 of R & S and get it out next year, but I'd like to still have him work on spelling this year.

What could I get that wouldn't be too easy? He struggles not with the word list but the exercises. Thank you.

Spelling You See has been AH-MAZING for my 3rd grade son. Just since September, when we started using it, his spelling has improved dramatically and he's CONFIDENT now! I also have my 1st grade son using it.

It's basically copywork and studied dictation. The first 3 days the student uses colored pencils to find and "chunk" common phonograms and letter combinations and then copy the passage. 4th day the child "chunks" and then teacher dictates the passage while student writes (with help when needed), and the 5th day the student writes from dictation with no help. It is so simple (15 min per day) but SO incredibly effective. www.spellingyousee.com They have stellar customer service.

I was going to suggest r&S until I read the post, but maybe as others suggested put the spelling aside for now and work on something different like vocabulary. For my natural speller we are using a combo of r&s and then learning Latin and Greek roots to reinforce vocabulary.
