txhsmom Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Does anyone have any experience with Landry Academy's Online High School Chemistry class? I noticed that the two teachers have different syllabi. One listed 12 labs while the other listed 8 labs. Any experience with either Mrs. Prieskorn or Mr. Leingang? Also, I know that they use Spectrum Chemistry. From reading this forum, it seems that the labs for Spectrum Chemistry are important yet Landry uses different labs. Are the Landry labs less rigorous? Has anyone taken Landry Chemistry and done well in an AP Chem course afterwards? Thank you! 1 Quote

I had to go look at his syllabus to see that he's the one with 12 labs. It might be that the other teacher didn't note the online labs as labs because I think the sections are standardized. Mr. Leingang is very thorough and often posts additional videos to help students study difficult concepts. Both T and I have been completely satisfied with the class. Landry uses this kit from Home Training Tools: http://www.hometrainingtools.com/classic-chemistry-kit I imagine that they switch out the labs because of how expensive the Spectrum kit is. I think they do try to parallel the original Spectrum labs as much as time constraints and budget allow. They do require complete lab reports and learning to write them has been very good for Trinqueta. They started with more explicit instruction in PreChem and have continued to do reports regularly in Chemistry. Not all labs require the standard format reports. Usually the online labs come with worksheets that the student fills out instead. The at home labs are typed up and a couple of pages long. Trinqueta finds the class challenging, but not overwhelming. She did high school biology last year with me and PreChem (the chemistry semester of an IPC course) at Landry before taking this class. She does plan to take either AP or DE chemistry in a few years. Landry does offer a more advanced Chem class that is meant to prepare students for the AP exam. 1 Quote
crazyforlatin Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 (edited) In order to have a reasonable schedule for next year, how much time should a student expect to devote to this class? Edited January 22, 2016 by crazyforlatin 1 Quote
txhsmom Posted January 22, 2016 Author Posted January 22, 2016 Yes, thank you very much for your reply and info. They are very helpful. I would also like to know about how much time is needed each week for the class. What type of homework do they have? DD is planning to take Lukeion Latin 1 next year so I want to make sure she's not over loaded. Thank you! 1 Quote
chiguirre Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 It takes T about 4 hours per week to do the homework. This is usually a couple of chapter in Spectrum (they're short) and their exercises, some extra videos and practice problems OR one chapter and a lab. 1 Quote

I would actually add another 1-2 hours on top of T's hours since high school science is the kind of challenge she needs but it does take extra time to absorb the material. We'll have to skip Chemistry next year. We are with Clover Creek physics now and it's a quite a full program (really, one of the best classes we've taken). So a solid science program every other year will let us shift our focus to another area. Quote
txhsmom Posted January 22, 2016 Author Posted January 22, 2016 I noticed that you said T. took a preChem class. Do you feel T. would not have been properly prepared for the Chem class this year if she did not take the preChem? My dd is taking HS Bio this year. She's had a middle school level physical science (Rainbow and Plato) before that. I'm wondering if that will be enough. Quote
