Which has better/more educational and generally useful apps?  I'd like to add a real tablet to our gadget collection soon, but I can't get a good handle on which would be more useful (and I'm not getting both!).  Thoughts?  Experiences?

They're *close* to equal.  Reality is, you could buy Kindle fire tablets for every single one of your dc and yourself for less than the cost of one ipad.  I love my ipad, but my ds uses a kindle fire.  For those ages, I'd get kindle fires.  The coverflow is great for non-readers, the parental controls are better, the immersion reading is terrific, the integration with your library's e-services (overdrive, etc.), you'll love it.  You'd much rather have 3 kindle fires than one ipad.  Get an ipad for yourself.  :)
