crazyforlatin
I'm not sure if I will enroll DD in WWS2 with WTMA. No class is perfect obviously, and the first semester is not yet finished, so I'm still on the fence. Ideally, I would continue using all of WWS, but DD is not writing much. It's week 14 or 15 in the textbook, and she barely spends 1 hour per week on writing; she gets good grades without much effort. I've been looking at WHA, TPS, LTOW with Jessica Shao of Coram Deo, onlineG3, Blue Tent (is that too much of a jump?), possibly Attuneup, BraveWriter, and Landry Academy. What have I not covered, right? Which composition class would be appropriate after WWS1?

VANURSEPRAC
D12 is taking WWSI with WTMA and I too and shocked at the lack of writing. She is making great grades but she too spends minimal time on weekly assignments. Yes, it is only 1/2 through.
ByGrace3
Just curious as I am looking at WTMA for next year...at this point would you say they have completed half of the WWS book? Do you think they will finish the book during the class? Or at least most of it?

Yes, they are scheduled to complete the WWS1 book this year; they are approximately at the half-way mark. My DD spends about 1.5 hours per week (outside of the 2 hours of class time) on writing assignments. This doesn't strike me as too little time, especially since my DD is having fun, writing well, and I'm not having to teach it! But I am following this discussion...
Roadrunner
We aren't taking the class, but we have been working through WWS1 at home. Writing assignments do ramp up. I remember in the beginning there wasn't much, but this week DS had to write a 6 paragraph piece with documentation on Caesar (I think this is week 30). We are planning on WWS2 class next year, so I am curious about this as well. Edited January 18, 2016 by Roadrunner
crazyforlatin
I mentioned on another thread that we enrolled in Attuneup for phases 1 and 2 and dropped after the amount of work in DD's other classes. What I like about Amy's class is that there is some sort of writing required on a daily basis with a final draft due on Friday. Amy provides feedback on the rough draft by Thursday. So this type of consistent writing, consistent feedback with immediate rewriting from the student is what I had hoped for with WWS1. The reason I hesitate continuing with Attuneup is that her course selection is limited. She is now revamping her website and thinking about her future courses. I'm wondering if this has more to do with DD than WWS1 which I can see from an objective point of view is beneficial for the struggling/resistant writer. I'm not making any decisions yet because I really want WTMA to work out for us. But I think there needs to be more. I don't think it's a good idea to have classes on Monday and Wednesday with a paper due by the following Monday. For DD, she does that one writing assignment on Monday, just before it's due, takes her less than an hour. But if anyone wants to convince me that this is good enough for a 10 year old, please do. Of course this is WTMA's second year so I'm sure they are looking for ways to improve their classes.

I think that you need to find a high school level class (and probably an honors level one) for your dd. WWS1 is meant for middle school writers, if your dd is past that level she won't get much out of the class. You could try the Rhetoric classes at WTMA or high school level composition classes at other schools. I'd aim to have her take the AP English Language and Composition test when she's ready and then discontinue writing classes.
