lilmissc74 Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 My son is 14 and I'm planning for high school. It's our first year of home schooling and I started him in Noeo Biology 2. He has always loved science and it's a little too high level/easy for him. The kicker is he can't read a science textbook by himself and struggles greatly with handwriting so I need an interesting program that I can read to him, has pictures or videos he can watch and have him answer questions orally. I need something harder, but not TOO much more! He especially loves experiments so I have looked at Noeo Chemistry 3 which has a lot of experiments - we were disappointed because I thought the Bio 2 class would have more hands on work. Any advice on high school science for kids with learning differences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. Quote
geodob Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 You could have a look at Kahn Academy, which covers all subjects. But also has a comprehensive Science program. It is also free to use. https://www.khanacademy.org/ Quote
Dmmetler Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 You may want to look at Uzinggo. I have a friend who uses it with a screen reading program for a child with reading disabilities who loves science. It's fairly easy to add physical labs to the virtual ones. Quote
Hilltopmom Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 When I taught high school special Ed, we used the AGS Science books. They had two levels, one higher (& covered more content) & one lower reading level, but both lower than typical science texts. Quote
Pen Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 What are his challenges? If he would qualify for Learning Ally or Bookshare due to reading difficulties he could use standard science texts and that would give him audio access, while he could look at the actual text for pictures. You could also consider CK-12 materials on kindle with a computer voice recognition program to do the reading. It has links to other materials online, but when we tried it at one point a bunch of links were broken. I'd love to know more about your Noeo experience since I was considering that. Quote
