PrincessMommy Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 (edited) My dd was in a minor fender-bender today. She is about to buy her own car and get her own insurance...so she's worried that if we claim this with the insurance it will make her rates go up. She wants to see how much the damage will cost (she said minor scratches and no dents) to see if it's worth it to pay out of pocket. We're wondering if there will be a problem if she waits to call insurance to tell them about the accident. Or, can she call to say there was an accident but then if there is not claim, does it go away from her record? What's the normal protocol? Edited January 16, 2016 by PrincessMommy Quote
JFSinIL Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Might depend - did the other party plan to contact their insurance? Or file a police report (some places require it is over a certain dollar value of damage). Quote
PrincessMommy Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 as it turns out, the other party wants to file a claim so the decision has been made for her. 1 Quote
JFSinIL Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 (edited) Stay calm, and treat this as a learning experience for her, how to deal with insurance and how to file claims, etc. Good life skill to know. My oldest dd called me a couple years ago to say she had been in a fender bender (going around a blind corner on rain-slicked street she became second car to rear-end a stalled car on the street - then another car bonked into her and took off so she had rear damage too. She calls "Mom, I crashed the car. There is smoke coming out from under the hood. What do I do?" Me - "Turn the car out and get out of it!" Seriously?) Edited January 17, 2016 by JFSinIL Quote
