AuNaturel Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 1933, 1949, or 1994? I'm having my daughter read Little Women (she's 9) but when she is finished, I'd like to have her watch the movie. It's been ages since I've watched any of these, and I'm not sure which one to choose. There is no way I'll be able to talk my daughter into watching more than one. [emoji14] I'm a Hepburn fan, so that's my initial response to the selection, but the star doesn't always make the movie the best of its kind. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk Quote
Guest Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 1994 with Susan Sarandan, Claire Danes, Winona Ryder, Christian Bale, Gabriel Byrne....oh my. One of my all-time favorite movies, hands-down, no hesitation. Quote

Kristie in Florida Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Christian Bale will always be my Teddy. 3 Quote

Wishes Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 I also thought the 94 version was closest to the actual book. Quote

Monica_in_Switzerland Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Also a '94 fan! I watch it at Christmas every year and sob... but my ugly cry moment is when *that person* receives *that gift* from grandfather after her illness has passed.   1 Quote

I love the 94 version. I also watch it every Christmas. Susan Sarandon as Marme is brilliant! Quote
alisoncooks Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 My girls and I just watched the '94 version this past week. I grew up watching the Hepburn version, though, and have fond memories of it. FWIW, I think they're both on Amazon Prime. Quote
Garga Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 '94. Winona IS Jo and Christian Bale IS Teddy. Just are. Love that version. 2 Quote
musicianmom Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Happy to know I'm not alone in my love for the 1994 movie. I remember seeing it for the first time, it was magical. I was so excited to show it to my oldest dd, since she had read all the books multiple times. Unfortunately she cried and was miserable afterward, because seeing the movie had destroyed her own images of what she thought the characters looked like. She had to go back and re-read and listen copiously to the audiobook in order to erase the movie from her mind. I was afraid she would never watch a movie adaptation again, but then Harry Potter came along and there have been no problems! Quote

I know exactly how she feels. :-) I thought that this adaptation was the closest to the book in all ways. There were some things left out or not emphasized as much as I would have liked, but the overall feel of it was the best of them all. Probably it's a good thing that she didn't see the one with Elizabeth Taylor in a blonde wig playing Amy and June Allyson as Jo. Quote
musicianmom Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Pretty sure I only saw that one at my mom's insistence. Ugh. Quote
