Beaniemom Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Dd5 has straight fine hair and has few issues with tangles but this winter it seems as if the second she puts up her hood, the back of her hair becomes a tangled mess. Does anyone have suggestions on combating this problem? We don't use hair product other than shampoo and conditioner typically but are open to it if it will help. Quote
zoobie Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 You can buy some leave-in spray conditioner or detangling spray or make your own by diluting a squirt of conditioner in water. It's static electricity and dry hair. Bad combo! :) 1 Quote
AK_Mom4 Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Braids were DD14s best friend at that age to prevent tangles in the back. I would put in 3 or 4 small braids in the morning in the back of her hair. Not too tight because she has a tender head, but enough to hold the hair. We had better luck with hats and loose hoods than attached hoods for keeping her hair untangled - something about the hood moving around on the hair made a mess. Her favorite was a combination hood and scarf that she could twirl the ends. Having something not attached to the coat meant it moves less and fewer tangles. Quote
pehp Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Braids here, for my 5 year old with long lovely statick-y 'romantic' locks!! We generally use knitted hats, not hoods, and I do think that helps. Quote
Mabelen Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 (edited) I always used de tangling spray with my girls. Our lives were much better. Edited January 14, 2016 by Mabelen Quote
Guest Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 I just bought two more tangle teezers today! We keep hair up around here be use hats instead of hoods, but tangles do happen. Those brushes are hands down the best. http://www.amazon.com/Tangle-Teezer-Salon-Elite-Pink/dp/B00264NW7G Quote
Guest Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 I tried the knockoffs with the handle, by the way, and they just don't seem to work as well. Quote
Ravin Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Detangler spray. Lots and lots of detangler spray. DS won't let me braid his hair or even put it in a ponytail most of the time. Sometimes he'll let his sister do it, though. Quote
alisoncooks Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 We could not live without our Tangle Teezers, detangler spray, and braids. I braid the girls hair every night before bed because of the snarls we faced every morning. 1 Quote
kitten18 Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 I agree with a detangler spray and braids. We did not like the tangle teazer brushes at all! They were horrible for Dd's hair. They Wet Brush works well for her. My only other advice is to stay on top of the tangles. Brush in the morning and braid, brush at night and braid. Don't let the tangles get away from you or you will be spending an hour getting them out. Quote
bolt. Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 (edited) With wet hands (on dry hair) I rub in a small amount of conditioner, followed by a small amount of hair gel. Also, I only wash it 2x per week. Edited January 14, 2016 by bolt. Quote
Just Kate Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 My dd has longish, fine, wavy hair. And it tangles...boy does it tangle. Our remedy - instead of using detangling spray, I mix conditioner and water in a spray bottle, which tends to work better for dd. We use Aussie 3 Minute Miracle conditioner and every couple of showers, I lather it on and take a wide tooth comb and really work it in (i also use this time to get the knots out that dd can't get herself). Dd uses a brush similar to the one posted above, only hers has a handle. We got it at Sally's. As she gets older (she's 8yo), she is doing better at getting the tangles out herself. Finally, she wears braids at night. She likes having her hair down during the day, but at night I insist on braids. Quote
redsquirrel Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 DS2 has thick, silky long straight hair. He gets actual mats in his hair. it's pretty bad. When that happens I sit him down and spray detangler spray right on the mats and gently pick them out. It takes a while, but I can generally get it done. For the hood of her jacket causing tangles, a pony tail or a braid might work, or it might just slip out, but it's worth a shot DS2 switched to a hat, instead of using a hood, it seems to cause fewer tangles. Good thing I am a knitter, so he has a never ending supply 1 Quote
Rachel Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 A good conditioner helps with my daughter's hair. I also use detangler and keep her hair pulled back. Braids were better than ponytails but either is better than leaving her hair down. Quote
