If you used Singapore Math at all, ever, what sequence did you follow?

Recommended Posts

We are using Singapore Math now (not my oldest child). He is in level 5A. I am trying to decide if he should continue through 6B. And then NEM looks great. Or, if I should leave at some point and do an American pre algebra. My older one went straight to Jacob's algebra, and did some Keys to Algebra in there. I think maybe, in my dream world, we would go through NEM before switching to American sequence. But it looks like that might not be practical. He is not ahead of grade level at all and it might just slow things up drastically for a child who is already behind schedule.

If the reason he is behind schedule because he is struggling, he might benefit from a great big review of arithmetic followed by a gentle introduction to algebra.  We used Derek Owens for this (though my student wasn't struggling).  We went from somewhere in the middle of Singapore 6A to DO.

You could also move straight to Jacobs from Singapore 5 or 6, but the problem with that is if the student needs more arithmetic input, you won't get that with Jacobs.

He is behind because he was in public school and the school did very little. He came home at the end of 4th grade and tested in to 3B. He is in 5A now. He has been home less than 2 yrs, so he is going at a good pace. We have had to do a lot of catch up. He likes Singapore Math a lot.

If he is doing well, you could probably jump straight into Jacobs after 5B, and certainly after 6B.

My dd went from 5B to Jacobs and she has been fine with that. We did go pretty slowly through Jacobs though, and I had her do about every problem in the book. With my next dd we have switched to Math Mammoth so not completely sure what our sequence will be. I've also got a hankering to try  Forester (?sp) with her. I loved Singapore but, unfortunately, something about it drove youngest dd crazy and she does better with MM. It's a little strange really, because youngest dd has more natural math ability.

I switched to AoPS after SM 5.I own the four year series of NEM, and  I have done parts of NEM with my kids. I find it more difficult to teach from and a lot of annoying decimal (calculator) problems rather than straight mathematical teaching.

I love AoPS, but there are lots of options. I would recommend that you consider something other than NEM however.

My dd went from 6B to NEM.  She worked through NEM 3A and is now taking Finite as a dual credit student. She isn't going into a math related field so Finite will cover her college math requirements.  We also did a semester of AOPS Counting and Probability in the middle of NEM 2.

He can finish 5b by end of summer if he wants to.

My oldest did 5A, 5B, 6A and 6B in the three months of summer. He did SM2A-SM6B standards, followed by AoPS prealgebra, intro to number theory, intro to counting and probability, intro to algebra, then intermediate algebra concurrent with intro to geometry, now at precalculus. He has took the ACT and will take the new SAT.

My younger did SM2A-SM5B standards, followed by AoPS prealgebra, intro to number theory, intro to counting and probability, intro to algebra concurrent with intro to geometry, now reviewing algebra and geometry and learning the trigonometry as well as the prob & stats for ACT (talent search purpose) before starting intermediate algebra.

We school year round, breaking for family vacations.

We (both kids) did SM through 5B, including the CWP & IP books + sprints (which they loved, but mostly because I was willing to make a big harry deal out of it with a stopwatch and announcing the 'event' in my best monster-truck-rally voice).

We went straight from there to AoPS pre-alg.  I think having done the CWP books helped the transition considerably.
