Love2learn! Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 We are new to homeschooling. I have a very mathy kiddo (age 6) who is reading pretty well. However, he does not like reading out loud and sort of "eats" his words. He struggles with verbalizing comprehension because he just wants to do everything fast. I like the idea of FLL and how it talks you through the grammar piece slowly, I want him to think through the process. I also like the sample of WWE. I'm drawn to RLTL because it will take care of reading, spelling, phonics (I think).....which he still needs. Is there too much overlap in these programs? I'm questioning whether I should just do something more workbook style for some of these since we are in unchartered territory. I can't seem to "see" what I need to do..... and am feeling a little paralyzed by the choices. I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks in advance! Quote
Slache Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Reading Lessons Though Literature is intended to be used with English Lessons Through Literature which is supposed to cover grammar and writing just like the FLL/WWE combo so I imagine it would work just fine. My only concern is that since ELTL is 3 days a week and FFL/WWE is 5 days a week that it will take you longer to get through the programs, but is that really a bad thing? It might not even be the case because they're all so open and go. Many people have combined FLL/WWE with All About Spelling which is similar to RLTL and had great success so I imagine FLL/WWE/RLTL is a winning combination. :) Quote
WahM Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I don't see why there would be any overlap. WWE is writing, FLL is grammar, and RLTL is spelling. Also, to clarify the above statement about wwe/fll, wwe had a four day schedule and fll is intended to be used about three days a week. Neither are scheduled for five days. Quote
Slache Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Sorry. I know 2 families IRL using them and they both do it 5 days a week. :) Quote
WahM Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 No worries. Just wanted to post how they many times a week they are intended to be used. 1 Quote
sasterb Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 RLTL will cover phonics, spelling, and reading just like you thought. It would work quite well with FLL/WWE. We used FLL in the past and currently use RLTL and ELTL. Quote
lorisuewho Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 These will work together beautifully and will not overlap. They are solid choices! Quote
arliemaria Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 We are using FLL now along with 100 EZ Lessons. I love the look of both RLTL and ELTL. I wanted to use Spalding, but my husband was frustrated with my frustration and slow progress and bought and began using 100 EZ Lessons with Robby. I know this only takes you to about a 2nd grade reading level once complete so I will start another phonics/reading curriculum at its completion. We also do copywork a few times a week. Sometimes I feel silly doing this since he cannot yet read all the words he copies, but we have continued to do this anyways. I have Writing With Ease: The Complete Writer and SWB says not to begin until they are reading four letter words (consonant blends with vowel combinations). He is on lessons 35 in 100 EZ Lessons. Some of his recent words are: duck, with, luck, so I assume that he is ok with doing copywork along with her program. I plan on adding ELTL after we finish FLL. The only other language arts thing I am currently considering is purchasing Brave Writer's Jot It Down for composition. Quote
