I am trying to guide my 9 year old towards some self-directed educational interests.

He said he was interested in learning more about the Spartans.   The problem is, he is a late reader and only reading (on his own) at about a 2nd-3rd grade level depending on what chart you look at.   (He is reading Notebook of Doom independently.  It is rated as a lexile of 490L)

The other problem is that he is a bit of a history/science geek---(I mean that in a good way)---and it is hard to find resources at his reading level that aren't overly simplified.    So I am on the look out for recommendations for Spartan resources that would be interesting to him that he could do independently.   Any easy to read books?  Audiobooks?  Netflix movies?  Historical fiction?   etc.

He has already watched the Horrible History videos on youtube.  (We all love those.)
