Xuzi Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 When terminating my utilities prior to moving, do I put my end date as the day I'm moving, or the next day? So, say I'm moving on the 1st, do I have my water and electricity end-date be the 1st, or the 2nd? I'll want to take a shower in the morning, turn on lights, etc. Do they stop billing you starting on the 1st, or is that the last day they bill you for? I'm confused. Quote
ErinE Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Ask the person when you call. I say the last day I will be in the house. 1 Quote
Xuzi Posted January 12, 2016 Author Posted January 12, 2016 I hate making phone calls, so I'm trying to use the online option. :p Quote
ErinE Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I hate making phone calls, so I'm trying to use the online option. :p It depends on company policy. One may be the day you want it cancelled; the other the last day in the house. Read the termination date definition and if it's unavailable, call. I prefer setting up online (no one to sell me things I don't need), but I prefer to cancel on the phone so I can ask these questions. Quote
sgo95 Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I think that utilities like water and power are not turned off, but instead are switched to the new owner's or landlord's name. You could arrange for a last meter reading to be taken on the day you move out. I may be mistaken... Quote
Arcadia Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 My utilities will read off the meter so they will just read after the end date. They also send someone to turn off the utilities. Quote
Happygrl Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 When we've moved out, we've always done it for the day after our last day because our experience has been that they cut it off that day, so electricity, etc. wouldn't be available that morning. I've heard it varies but the places we've lived (Texas, Georgia, Washington, Indiana & Illinois have all been that way). Quote
