IndigoGlitter Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Is the card still usable if the chip gets destroyed? Quote
Arcadia Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 (edited) Nope. The chip has to be readable. The bank would have to issue you a new card. They are less likely to be able to do that at the bank itself though so you would get a replacement in the mail. Edited January 11, 2016 by Arcadia Quote
G5052 Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 In time, yes. The machines are transitioning that way. Quote
Suzanne in ABQ Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 I have seen videos in which people cut the chip out of their card on purpose. I think if the machine doesn't sense the chip's presence, it will read the magnetic strip. A real person might deny it, though. Quote

I think if the machine doesn't sense the chip's presence, it will read the magnetic strip. It depends on how the card reader is set up. Target won't let me swipe their mastercard at their self check because it knows those cards have chips. I could however swipe my Target mastercard at my local supermarkets self check. Quote
Guest Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Ask for a new one to be issued and try not to use it. That shouldn't be accepted with damage. Quote

SparklyUnicorn Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Question regrading chip debit. Do those have you enter a pin? Quote
GailV Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 (edited) Question regrading chip debit. Do those have you enter a pin? Ours does. Except at Walgreens for really low purchase amounts. Edited for spelling. Edited January 11, 2016 by GailV 1 Quote
madteaparty Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 I've used mine internationally and domestically and no pin requested yet. But signature sometimes. Quote
KathyBC Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 (edited) Question regrading chip debit. Do those have you enter a pin? The first ones did. The new ones have a "flash" feature, for lower amounts. If the purchase is over a certain amount or if the "flash" has been used more than... 3x?, you have to insert the card and enter the pin.
