Wholesomemomma
OK walk me through this. Last year I used FLL2 when my son was in 2nd grade, and it was good (albeit teacher--intensive, which was fine at the time). But this year since I had a rising 1st grader to teach to teach too, I switched him to CLE Language Arts for 3rd grade. He's doing well with it and it's independent enough that it frees up time for me to work with my 1st grader. BUT I can't help but feel like we're missing out, not doing FLL3 this year. I loved how level 2 had memorization of the definitions of the parts of speech and lists of pronouns, prepositions, etc. I'm torn because I want something more independent (we do other teacher-intensive curricula) but LOVE the way FLL works. Next year I'd potentially be doing 2 levels of FLL and WWE, and will also have a rising Ker and a 2 year old. TELL ME WHAT TO DO, WISE AND EXPERIENCED MAMAS. ETA: one thing that bothers me about CLE is the busywork. And we cut out the spelling and writing in favor of WWE and Spelling You See, so we don't even use all of it. I ONLY want the grammar. That's another reason FLL appeals to me. Edited January 10, 2016 by Wholesomemomma

Momto6inIN
I don't really have anything to offer, just giving you a bump. We are starting FLL3 with my to-be 3rd grader next year. We've done very laid back grammar so far and I think she's ready for something a little more intensive, which is why we're switching to FLL. I hope you get some good responses!
Guest
Blinders--order blinders. Put on as soon as they arrive. Seriously... CLE is excellent. It will cover all your bases whether you choose to use all the parts or not. FLL 3 has the same things to memorize as FLL 2 plus an ENORMOUS amount of diagramming. If it were me, {and it has been} I would choose time over what looks like greener grass. You have a lot of youngers that are going to need you. You have chosen an excellent curriculum to cover grammar. Stay the course. {Blinders....}
SnMomof7
What do you consider busywork in CLE? Honestly, with so many littles, I'd use CLE alone for all language arts at this age. It's easy to get done, covers all the bases, no transition time between all the 'pieces' of LA, etc. The work is solid, functional, spiral review, I don't see any busywork. If anything I would think of leaning harder on the CLE and eliminating some of the separate pierces you have going now. I know that isn't quite he answer you were looking for, though :).

Is that necessary at this age? Or does CLE cover it later? I don't EVER remember diagramming this young as a child, but I could have just blocked it from my memory. Thanks!! SnMomof7
CLE starts simple diagramming in 2nd, actually.
UnlikelyHomeschoolingMama
CLE starts simple diagramming in 2nd, actually. So would a child coming from FLL 2 to CLE 3 be behind or does it review concepts at that point?
SnMomof7
It is very, very basic in 2nd. You can easily start in 3rd. My oldest started in 4th and very quickly back filled the diagramming knowledge she lacked.
Wholesomemomma
THANKS mamas! Paradox5, I like what you said about BLINDERS. I need to order some. I see in the TOC of FLL3 that it covers things like prepositional phrases, comma splices and a few other things which CLE LA doesn't cover in level 3. I see in the S&S for CLE that prep phrases aren't covered until level 6! :( Edited January 16, 2016 by Wholesomemomma
Wholesomemomma
So would a child coming from FLL 2 to CLE 3 be behind or does it review concepts at that point? To answer your question, my son went from FLL2 to CLE3 with absolutely no problems. :)
