Janice in NJ
Hello to all. I am looking for books to send to my parents to pass the time. Nothing too introspective or depressing (winters are already long and gloomy in upstate NY). They loved Boys in the Boat if that helps. :-) Advice please? THANK YOU! Faithr
How about the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency books? The Hornblower series is also great.
J-rap
Cheaper By The Dozen Belles On Their Toes Mama's Bank Account Fifth Chinese Daughter Exodus Battle Cry Advise and Consent (and the following books) LOTR The Good Earth Girl Meets God And The Ladies of The Club My Life In France The Ladies' Auxiliary Christy Black Heels to Tractor Wheels This Organic Life (takes place in upstate New York) We loved Cheaper By the Dozen and Belles on Their Toes! I wouldn't recommend The Good Earth though. It is both introspective and depressing! (Though I still enjoyed it. :)
Kareni
I'll recommend the Don Camillo books by Giovanni Guareschi. It is a series of about six books about an Italian priest and his nemesis the Communist mayor set in the 1950s in Italy. The priest sometimes talks to Christ on the cross who talks back to him. The wikipedia entry will give you a good idea of the content of the series. The first book is The Little World of Don Camillo. Cosmos
Fannie Flagg? I just read the All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion and really enjoyed it. I'm thinking of sending it to my mom for her birthday.

JumpedIntoTheDeepEndFirst
There is a series by Susan Albert that are mysteries where Beatrix Potter is the sleuth doing all the solving-volume one below. http://www.amazon.com/Tale-Hill-Cottage-Tales-Beatrix/dp/0425201015/ref=sr_1_25?ie=UTF8&qid=1452947027&sr=8-25&keywords=susan+albert There is also a series about a retired Sherlock Holmes living in the country. I think this is volume one. http://www.amazon.com/Beekeepers-Apprentice-Segregation-Russell-Mystery/dp/1250055709/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1452947093&sr=8-2&keywords=sherlock+bees There is also a series of books, again light mysteries by Miss Read http://www.amazon.com/Village-School-Fairacre-Miss-Read/dp/061812702X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452947189&sr=8-1&keywords=miss+read (My mom loves light mysteries during cold, darker winters :) )
