Rod and Staff English 2 Question

I have a ds age 7 second grade doing ACE Paces for English/Literature. He is doing well with them but I'm having a hard time with all the negative reviews I read. It makes me second guess using the curriculum. Here's my question...if I switch over to Rod and Staff English, when do you think would be the best time to do so? He has a 6 yr old sister doing CTGE right now but we won't be continuing it after this workbook. She is advanced in reading and spelling and could easily be combined with my ds if we switch. There is some competition among them though and sometimes my older ds feels inadequate compared with his younger sister as she reads better than him and is very quick to answer comprehension questions. So here's my options;

1. Switch now and have ds do R&S on his own until he finishes Preparing to Build and then start dd trailing one book behind him

2. Finish out this semester with ACE and start Rod and Staff 2 in August combining my ds (grade 3 then) and dd (grade 2) and deal with the competitiveness between them

3. Switch now and work slowly through R&S with both dc....not sure bc dd is a young 1st grader. Even though she's advanced in some areas, she's only 6! I don't want to overwhelm her.

Ok so if it were you, which option sounds best? I do like the thought of teaching them together as that would be easier on me. But I know I will have to deal with the competitiveness. Thoughts?

All products have negative reviews. All have positive reviews. Which ones do you believe? :-)

If your ds is doing well with them, then I see no reason to change to Rod and Staff.

If you decide you just need to change, :-) then let your ds start Beginning Wisely in the fall, and your dd Preparing to Build. I see no reason for your ds not to be able to do Beginning Wisely after finishing his ACE material.

CLE Lang Arts--

As we are a 4 boys family, we have had many discussions about we do not compete in our family. Competiton has no place in our home, especially in school. every one is working the best they can. We support each other's efforts. Perhaps a similar family meeting theme would be beneficial for your family?

I see no reason to switch right now. They're still young. If your heart is set on switching, I'd wait till the fall. You can jump right into RS's 3rd grade English.

Something to keep in mind. . .RS is a solid program, but it is more teacher intensive that ACE. If you're looking for the independence of ACE but with more rigor, I second the previous poster's recommendation for CLE's Language Arts. If you don't need the independence, just disregard. ;)

Thank you...I needed to hear this! I guess it just seems like the vast majority of reviews concerning ACE are negative whereas with other curriculums there is more of a balance. I think I will wait right now and finish what we have and reevaluate in the fall. My son told me today how much he "loves" these paces and he does do well with them. The English/Lit is the only subjects we are using through ACE and I'll admit I love the independence they offer. I will also have a new baby in April so that is something to consider. I don't think my children necessarily have to have the most rigorous education, but I don't want them behind their peers either. Average is fine with me! I guess all the complaints about ACE being behind grade level and R&S being ahead and considerably cheaper, had me wanting to change without really "needing" to.
