Jennifer132
We have vinyl plank flooring throughout and area rugs. The house is two story, so lugging up and down is a factor. Which vacuum do you love for this scenario?
Jenn in CA
I have two Miele canister vacs. One for upstairs and one for downstairs. Truly the ideal scenario! They're $500 each though... I know, I'm very spoiled. That's how badly my husband wanted me to vacuum more often. It has a beater bar head for area rugs too. I love this vacuum. We used to buy a new vac every 2-5 yrs because they would die. The Miele will last a very long time.
gardenmom5
I also have a two story, with hardwood, tile, and area rugs. miele. it is very light - and I don't mind "lugging" it up and down stairs. I used to have a kenmore/panasonic canister (which was good when it was new, . . ) - it weighed alot in comparison, and was clunky. I hated to have to drag it out for those "little" messes. the miele fits under furniture much more easily - meaning I don't have to move as much. I've been able to order more specialized tools from amazon that fit it much better than the "generics". dudeling is 10 - and HE will get it out to vacuum up stuff. my only complaint is the cord could be longer . . . . ktgrok
I just got the Hoover Air upgright for Christmas. It's cordless, but has TWO batteries and a charger. So one is always fully charged. It's pretty light, considering and works well on my hard floors. Can't say on area rugs for sure, but my mom has area rugs and loves it. She's the one that bought it for me. My only complaint is that the attachments kind of suck...not a lot of suction. But for regular vacuuming it's great.

Squawky Acres
Miele. Lightweight, adjustable, and very powerful. Plus, it comes in a clever box. Husband is vacuuming the living room with the Miele while the wife and daughter nap on the couch. I think they are trying to say it is a rather "quiet" vacuum, but I thought it was comedy.

Gentlemommy
Another vote for Miele. I love mine.
Jan in SC
I just bought an oreck magnesium, and I love it. It is so light and picks up everything. It doesn't have any attachments, but I have another vacuum for that and I can swifter. I found it on Amazon for $150 off the oreck price. Spryte
We have an Electrolux and love it for hard floors. I'm thinking of a second vacuum - might try a Miele, after all the raves. Which model?
Ellie
I have two vacs, an upright for upstairs (carpet, tile in the bathrooms), one for downstairs (hardwood or tile). Both are Electrolux, and I'm quite happy with them.
Ellesmere
I am happy with our Miele. But we do not have a second floor. Similar flooring though. I don't think ours is sold anymore but it is similar to the Miele complete C3 Kona and we didn't spend the list price at our local shop. Thesweethome blog did a review of vacuum cleaners and recently updated. But I haven't checked their reviews in awhile. I think they also did a review on cheaper vacuums. Guest
I have this model. http://m.ebay.com/itm/Miele-Capricorn-S-5980-Canister-Vacuum-w-SEB-217-3-Electrobrush-/272087546974?nav=SEARCH I got it because it has a HEPA filter. New, it cost more. It's heavier than the one we have at the beach house, a newer Miele. The lady who sold it to us also sells carpets and said NOT to use beater bars on carpets as it damages the carpet, and voids any warranty. We were not buying new carpet but thought I would pass that along. We use the vacuums on carpet, area rugs, wood floors, linoleum and ceramic tile. There are different brush heads for hard floor and for carpet.
pehp
This is exactly my scenario, and I have to say I love my Dyson canister. My husband bought it for me on Cyber Monday a few years ago. I'm smitten. Very lightweight, too. My father still uses the Electrolux that my grandmother bought in the 1960s, so that tells you something about that cleaner (at least as it was made back then!). A workhorse.
AppleGreen
Just got this Shark: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007L5I7DY?keywords=shark%20vacuum&qid=1451793754&ref_=sr_1_9&s=vacuums&sr=1-9 Love it so far! I am amazed at how much dirt it picks up. It is very affordable, easily goes from area rug to hardwoods, and it is easy to retrieve wayward Legos that get sucked up. :001_smile: I was planning on getting a Dyson because they are (were?) considered the gold standard, but I am quite pleased with our choice. It feels like I got a very good deal at $118. Oh, and the color is lovely (I have the purple). It also has very strong Amazon reviews and lots of them. Kelly on the prairie
One of my favorite purchases in 26 years of marriage has been my Riccar. When we were first married we went through sweepers from Walmart every one to two years. Those sweepers ran anywhere from $90-140 dollars. We moved to a much bigger house with much more carpet. When the sweeper I had pooped out, I finally complained to my mom. She said go to a sweeper store (Mr. Sweeper). I went. When the man told me the price I had a hard time keeping a straight face. I went home and my husband and I laughed about it all weekend. $500 dollars for a sweeper?! I went down to my mom's house and asked her what she was smoking when she recommended a broke, young married couple get a Riccar sweeper. She laughed and asked me to remember when I was still at home and her Hoover finally gave out. I remembered. I did the math. She had had the Riccar 10 years and expected it to last 10 more. We had spent more than that already in cheap vacuums. We bought the Riccar. The Riccar is going strong at 17 years of age. We now also have a Riccar sweeper for upstairs. Mom moved to an apartment last spring and we took her Riccar...27 year old sweeper. The best thing is, Mr. Sweeper can work on them right in his shop. We take ours in once in a blue moon for new belts and a general look over. He's like the Maytag man in the old ads. I hope THAT poor man retired before Maytag went to crap:)!...That's another review for another day.
