Alicia64
I have 12 year old boys and I'd love to find a book or three that has a positive message to it. I'm not against Christian, but I'm talking secular books. Or if you're just doing a fun read aloud: please share! :) Alley
Runningmom80
I wish I had some New Year inspiring books to talk about, and I would love to include something like that into our reading list, I'm going to research. I do usually start back after the holiday break with fun reads. Last year we read "Fortunately the Milk" and this year it's "The Graveyard Book," which I'm now realizing were both written by Neil Gaiman.
HomeAgain
The Phantom Tollbooth is a fun and thoughtful book for that age.
wintermom
Something with a theme where the young, main characters have to battle challenges to survive or help someone can be really inspiring. We just read Lost in the Barrens, by Farley Mowat, which has a helping others and battling for survival theme, and a surprise happy addition in the ending. There is a sequal, Curse of the Viking Grave, that we're waiting to read. Owls in the Family, also by Farley Mowat, is a funny book about helping 2 baby owls survive. The Secret Garden is really uplifting, as well. And My Side of the Mountain and Little Britches (if you skip the last chapter) are both great, positive books. L.M. Montgomery has a selection of uplifting short stories called Against the Odds, with both female and male main characters. Aurelia
We're still plugging through our books from December, but these are some that might be worth checking out: I thought Wonder by R.J. Palacio was pretty uplifting at the end. The main character does deal with some bullying because of his appearance during the story, though.
