SereneHome
For certain reasons (and I can tell you if you are interested) I wanted to do little gifts to my kids and husband for New Years. For other certain reasons (again, I can tell you, just didn't want to make this post 10 pgs long) I don't want it to be toys of any kind. So, I came up with the idea of giving them Dunkin Donuts gift cards. $10 for each kid. More for husband. They all love DD and I thought it would be a cool budgeting experiment to see how they do and of course, they could get the stuff they like in the meantime. So, what do ya think?

happi duck
Cute! I'd give each card along with a donut because getting the card would make me want a donut!

marbel
I love it. I give my kids gift cards to the nice convenience store near us (Wawa). They love it. It is so fun to give them cards so they can be in charge of their own buying. I don't get cards for my husband though; he just loses them or puts them on his desk to be buried under papers... I guess that is the same as losing them. Fun, not stupid at all!

Garga
Great idea. Our family New Year's resolution is to not always be trying to one-up one another or prove that we're right and they're wrong with our words. I think I'll give us all (myself included) clothespins as presents. We can put them on our lips when we feel the burning need to point out how someone else is wrong while we're right. :) It's become an epidemic in my house to argue a point to DEATH to prove oneself right. :)

MrsMommy
I love Dunkin Donuts, and was ecstatic when we finally got them in our area, so I can't see how you could go wrong!

Annie G
It sounds like a cute idea. But if the ages of your kids in your signature is accurate, are you going to have to manage the cards for them? That would suck the fun out of it for me. The kids would still love it, but it would be a pain to get there to find out that one kid forgot or lost his card and therefore started crying over not being able to get a doughnut. I have two adult children at home and they've had a tough last few months. Thanks for the idea- we have no Dunkin Donuts in town but they would enjoy a gift card to another place here. What a nice way to start the year!

What a nice way to start the year! Oh I don't mind. We have tons of DD around and stop there often enough. I would probably hold on to the card for my 4 yr old, but the other two should do fine. My 7 yr old calculates money pretty well (thanks to Singapore Mental math). And I know he will help his brothers. And if one forgets, I can always "loan" him the money. We'll see how it goes. I hope they have fun and enjoy it. I am going to do my hardest to not let it become anything negative for them. nd293
Cute idea, as long as you're either clear on how the amount must be budgeted or you really don't care how it's spent. My $10 gift card a month for sweets didn't work out so well when I realised the kids could budget well (get lots of candy for their money) but one of them would eat it all in a couple of days which truly freaked me out!
