Looking for morning basket suggestions: science and history

Recommended Posts

I have a K and 2nd grader. Last semester we read through a couple Usborne science books and did some picture books and longer books on ancient Egypt. I'm looking for something new to add for January. Any tried and true favorites or something along those lines that you've read lately?

Does it have to be picture books? If not, my 2 oldest love Among the Pond or Among the forest, etc (Among the _____ series). It's a living science book. Each chapter deals with a different animal. One chapter is usually 5 -10 mins.

A friend of mine likes the A Walk in the _____ series by Rebecca Johnson. She has others. These are picture books.

I was going to try out the Scientists in the Field series. Another picture book.

For my youngest, there's a series in the children's science section that has silly titles. For example, Do Bees Make Butter or Do Parrots Use Pillows or something similar to that.

We also love the Let's Read and Find Out series.

DD really liked the Among the ____ People, already mentioned, and the One Small Square books, though they might be a bit over your kindergartner's head. Gail Gibbons and Seymour Simon have good illustrated science books for kids.

For history, the D'Aulaire books are good - Abraham Lincoln, Greek Myths, etc. Betsy Maestro has some good ones on US history for that age. I think around 2nd grade we read Our Island Story (H.E. Marshall) and Britannia: 100 Stories from British History (Geraldine McCaughrean). DD liked them, especially the Britannia book.

We haven't used them, but the Quark Chronicles look good. I'm going to have DD read the first one (Botany) while studying her botany unit this spring.

Quark Chronicles has been GREAT for my kids. Honestly, I am not sure why people don't talk more about those books. I have been raving about them to everyone who will listen. :) GREAT books. We are half way through the botany one, and really enjoying it.

I agree! It's a wonderful science spine. We are loving Botony as well and we are using additional science books on the Wayfarers list to round it out.

I have the Bearnstein Bears Big Book of Science and Nature sitting on my shelf.  I'm hoping to read it to my 1st grader this year.  I think it would be great for K & 2nd.

Julia Darrow Cowles' Our Little Cousin series is good...I don't think they have an Egypt book, but they have Greek and Roman ones.  Boy of the Pyramids is a good early elementary chapter book for Egypt.
