My daughter is set to graduate from college in May and will attend graduate school in the fall. So she is our dependent from Jan to May of 2016 and then isn't from June to December. Just realized what you were asking. I think, but am not certain, that she would be considered an independent student...Such a common issue. Seems like there should be an easy answer. Hope someone else comes along who knows more... editing to add: I can't believe I thought about this in my sleep... FAFSA is actually for the school year which means it would run starting in Sept/Aug. The awards are for the school year, not the calendar year. So, I would fill it out in Jan. with where she will be starting in Sept. 2016-May 2017. THis spring semester is covered under last year's filing.
