Yoga mats - do thicker mats require better balance?

I finally found the right beginning yoga video as a gift for my relative - Gentle Yoga by Jane Adams - and now I'd like to get a yoga mat to go with it.  I don't know if it would be better to get a 1/4 inch mat, a 1/2 inch mat, or a 5/8 inch one.  Does the thicker mat require better balance?  A thicker mat sounds more comfortable for sitting or lying, but I don't want it to make balancing more difficult.  Thanks for sharing your experience.

I haven't found that in my experience....but then again, it's not something I think much of.  I'm fat, but I've been doing yoga for almost 30 years. :)   Do you know if the video uses props like yoga blocks, straps, and stuff?  Sometimes you can find a kit that includes everything.

1/2 & 5/8 do require better balance. the foam itself is also softer. (even if it had been thinner.) - though I have sometimes used one for 'mat work poses'.

1/4 should be fine. (especially if you are working in a carpeted room.) - and I need to get a new one.

eta: umsami is right - there are kits that include block (s) and strap along with  mat. (though I like my 1/4" mat I bought elsewhere.)  not all beginning yoga dvd's use other props.  some use a blanket - but you can use a regular blanket.

Spongey thick mats do require better balance. I have one that is about an inch thick and it is, for lack of a better word, squirrelly. It's great for some of my other exercises where I need seriously back and hip padding, though.
