If you missed the nap opportunity and are faced with keeping them jolly until bedtime, I strongly suggest a bath around 4pm or so.  A bath with...drops of food colour in the water!  When I had toddlers that were skipping naps but were absolutely horrible from 4-6:30 (6:30 was when I would put them to bed if they missed their naps) I would put them in a tub of warm water, lots of cups etc to play with and I would make a colour in the water.  They called it 'rainbow bath'.  It doesn't stain the tub or them, lol.  It did make for happy toddlers and made the time until bed much better. Plus, they need a bath anyway. Toddler could play in the tub and I would read my book while they splashed about.

But a bath with no hair washing...this is a 'feel good' bath, all about survival.  Unless you have 2 year olds who like getting their hair washed that is.

Bath,  right to dinner, and then BED!!!!

(I wish I could do that with my cranky 15 year old. He is very similar in temper to a 2 year old sans nap)

It gets worse!?

Love the bath idea, that may end up on today's agenda.

One finally went down. The other is quietly resting (unfortunately, this is the one that NEEDED the nap.)

Thanks for listening to me whine :-)

It gets worse and it gets better

Worse:

they are cranky but you have much less power to change things. You can't plop them in a bathtub of purple food colouring and be queen of their world. In fact, most of the time you have a hard time connecting that sweet baby to this big person living in your home.

Better:

They are cranky, but they don't cling. They are much more likely to put in their earbuds and just sulk.  You can snicker at the sulking behind their backs.  And sometimes you do see the sweet baby in this big almost adult living in your home.

Best: the day you realize you can just walk out of the house with a quick yell of 'I'm going to the store. Text me if you need anything when I am there. I'll be back in about an hour and a half"  and get a muffled 'ok, see you later' in response.  I love that part of having older kids.
