DawnM
This is such a stupid first world vent. But I have a hard time getting lipsticks that look decent on me. In fact, my friend, who sells Mary Kay, swore that every shade works, but some might look better. We tried on EVERY shade and only found ONE that even looked ok on me. They have discontinued it as soon as I have found it. The same goes for the two shades of Burts Bees that looked somewhat decent on me. Yup, every single time I find a shade that works, poof, it is no longer sold. And yes, JAWM dang it!
Guest
That stinks! Are you able or willing to be a little crazy with your shades? I discovered when I stopped looking for that perfect my lips but better color I could wear everything from Merlot to Tangerine to Oxblood and Fuchsia. It was finding a good nude and base color that was almost impossible, but when I branched out into bolder lips most shades worked great. Just a thought :). I'm ridiculously pale with yellow/warm undertones, but can't abide anything too brown without looking dead.
Guest
I hear ya. I feel a bit funny in lipstick for every-day wear, which is strange, because I wear makeup. It's not like a no-makeup thing. It's just that if my lips look noticeably colored I feel like I look like I played in mommy's makeup. Yet, if I am wearing lipstick and someone takes a photo of me, I think, "Well, now...that looks nice! I should wear lipstick!"

I believe they have good quality and they cater to those with olive skin. A lot of companies try out olive shades but then give up before brown people have a chance to discover it en masse and the colors are discontinued. Short-term view. Blech. Anyway, I used to really like Oriflame but they don't have it in Anglo-America, sadly, though they do have it in Mexico I believe.

Carol in Cal.
You know, Burt's Bees lipsticks look kind of garish or completely absent on me. And Mary Kay is very iffy. Some are great, but most not so much. I would suggest trying a department store brand, like Lancôme. I think the quality overall is better and usually I can find something that looks great that way, whereas the other two brands are iffy.

8circles
I have this problem, too. & Quill, I totally have this same issue. I always chalked it up to my bizarre skin-tone. I'm naturally very pale, but tan very well, with freckles, and I can't tell what my skin-tone is. By some measures I'm yellow-olive, by others I'm cooler - I just know I'm not neutral. I've had 2 shades that I've liked so far in my life & yes, they get discontinued and I've never found them again.

But light foundation, blush, and just a sheer shimmer on the lids (with a great mascara) really sets the tone for a bold and beautiful lip. It took me too many years to figure this out but I can't have tonal strength competing on my face. If I bring one area out the rest has to compliment, not compete. I think half of lipstick is attitude, to be frank. If you think you look like a clown you're going to be second guessing yourself and feel bad about your look. If you own it and go all in I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the compliments. /makeup color enabler
Guest
I mean, even coming from the gym or fresh out of bed it is amazing what a strong lip can do to pull me together and polish things. Powerful, gorgeous stuff. My favorite brand right now is NYX and it is so stinking cheap to experiment with. Every one of these shades has looked amazing on me so far, and there are only four I haven't tried. The formula isn't drying and is very long wearing too. If you're at Ulta they have a great three pack gift box of them right now that's a big savings. http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod3020045 Copenhagen, Prague, and Istanbul are very on trend for winter. Desert Strawberry
I'm a redhead with warm, ruddy skin, freckles and dark brown eyes. I don't even try a neutral or soft lip. It's red or nothing. If I can get past feeling ridiculous in bright red lipstick, I look great and feel amazing. I like a warm cinnamon for a more "subtle" red, or a blue-based red for a more dramatic look. I've never been able to figure out if I'm a summer or a fall or an early spring or whatever. Ii just know these two colors work for me, and nothing else does. The brand doesn't seem to matter, except that not everyone makes the right colors. I thought it sounded so strange, but it's super easy, and through the busy mommy years, it has consistently served me well. I use my lipstick on my eyes and cheeks. It sounds like I'd look bizarre, but a tiny dab of color here and there makes me look fresh and dewy and not really made up. I've done it with both lipstick and gloss in a variety of shades. It always looks good, and I always get compliments. Bonus points, I only have to carry a lipstick, eyeliner, and mascara for a full face.

A mask is distracting and who has time? That's a great tip!
Peach
I never go out without lipstick. Arctic Mama is right, when you go light on other things it really pulls you all together and brightens your face. I have a drawer that must have 25 different ones in it from about every brand known to man. Some are more winter colors - darker and richer - and some are summer brights. I am a big dabbler too. If I don't have the exact shade? I'll mix two or sometimes three colors on my lips to get it just like I want it. Clinique has a color called Different Grape that is like my lip color but way better that I often use as a base, then put other colors on top. If I layer, the creamier colors go on the bottom since they make a long-lasting base and the glossier ones on top. That way even when the shine wears off, I still have color hanging on. Go to a counter and play a bit. I love MK lipsticks but there are only a few of their colors that work on me and I am like...classic Winter. Fair with dark brown hair and blue eyes. I get that about the discontinued colors though. I am still mad at Lancome...LOL. They used to make the ONLY coral shade I could wear and discontinued it like 15 years ago. Guest
Actually, I take that back, Strawberry. I have a matte peach color that is just too opaque, milky, and cool for my skin without effort, and yet it would work great as an eye color and not crease or be greasy. I'm going to give this a shot for eyes and see how I like it! Better than tossing the shade which I'm class to doing. I have a champagne color I will also give a go :) Peach - I actually have a few lipsticks I'm melting down with some lip balm and eye shadow pigments to make them more wearable for me. The sky is the limit with DIY and I mix and layer shades all the time. Edited December 13, 2015 by Arctic Mama

MSNative
I made a MK person cry trying to find a lipstick that didn't look awful on me. I can turn any gorgeous lip color garish and awful!! Tried drugstore brands and expensive brands. After decades of trying everything I realized that lip stains work better for me. They seem to blend better with my lip color or something. Finally found two lip stains that I love. They stay on for hours, don't dry my lips and actually look good on me. Younique savvy and sleek. On the lipstick I linked, the NYX soft matte, I tried this with Ibiza which is an amazing sheer punch color. On the cheeks it worked amazingly well and really made the lip work better. Eyes not so much. Too much sameness. I tried that milky peach tone on my eyes and cheeks and that worked MUCH better than on my lips. When I put it on my lips it also didn't feel like it clashes so hard with my skin. Win! The champagne color won't work on the cheeks, but was great on the eyes. Just tried Doutzen's Nude from loreal, which has also been a bit of a fail on me and makes me look dead. Amazingly it is working! All three locations. Somehow it is making a previously unwearable shade on my lips now work there, maybe because of the harmonious color palette? Yay! So I'd say overall that was a worthy experiment and I'll definitely keep some colors for non-traditional use. Thanks Desert Strawberry! Guest
Yes! Press a tissue in first to blot out the worst of it, then pop your index finfer it your mouth, close your lips firmly around it, and pull out your finger. Extra points for an audible popping sound ;) It's an old trick but it removes any product from the inner rim of your lips, which is what transfers when you talk or smile. Amazingly even with very deep lipsticks it doesn't noticeably affect the coverage anyone can see. It just removed the trouble bits.

Are you turning up a tube of lipstick , putting a dab on cheeks and eyes straight from the tube and then somehow blending it in? Are you using different brushes and scooping it off the lipstick? I have heard of using the same thing for cheeks and lips, but I never did understand how one would blend it out and not have paint-cheeks. I almost never use eye shadow except as a liner; i wear nothing on my lids. My skin is very sensitive and I'm paranoid of having a reaction, so I stick with eye makeup that has worked for me before. Another reason I don't often wear lipstick is that I don't want to be concerned about the state of my lipstick. The long wear types dry my lips out like a prune. :D The nice, creamy ones need maintenance. I don't carry a puse, just a wristlet, so I don't have lipstick on me. The "best" I might accomplish is having it in the car, but then I still need to go look at myself in the bathroom or whatever to see that my lipstick is hanging in there. All this seems like way to much trouble, unless I'm going to a wedding or dinner. Are you frequent lipstick wearers having these problems? I think the one thing worse than pale lips are lips with goofed-up lipstick happening.

PinkyandtheBrains.
I'm going to recommend looking for liquid or gel lip stains. theBalm Stainiac Stilla Pixi ( their cheek stain is amazing and great on lips too) You want the gel or liquid kind, once it's dry I put Chapstick or similar over it. The lipstick feeling stains don't work the same. The advantage of the stains is the blend with your skin/lip tone. It also doesn't rub off once dried. My current favorite is the pixi brand, I found it at target. The cheek stain (I use for lips too) comes in three shades.

PeterPan
Can you try the colors on first? I never know until I actually get it on my face. They used mineral tints, I think Loreal or a normal kind of brand like that. So you could pick the tint and try it somewhere, sure. It sort of dilutes as you put it in the mixture, but that just gives it a soft smooth look. So you'd just add more or less to get the intensity right, assuming you liked the color. Peach
I like Black Honey too. It's got a very natural looking color and a bit of shine, not heavy. To get lipstick to hang on, I put on a layer, blot it well, then do it again, and add a light layer after I blot. It's not too heavy and will last me a good 4 or 5 hours. Even though the top layer's wearing off the underneath ones are still there. I always keep my lips covered though, especially here in Montana in the winter - keeps them from drying out and cracking, especially since I am walking to class and back every day.

I don't even wear make-up. I just have friends who've told me that's what they do. :) I have never been able to do that. A coral color in Clinique is not the same as the coral color in L'Oreal, etc....it would literally have to be identical to know if it would look good on me. MK found ONE color. Clinique several years ago found only one that looked ok, but I still wasn't thrilled. Burts Bees has had two. But all of the above are no longer available. I would guess that if I looked ok in a lot of different shades, getting somewhat close in another line of make up would be ok, but it doesn't work for me, at all. Alicia64
I highly recommend MAC lipstick in syrup. It's supposedly the most popular color b/c it looks good on so many. I also wear "angel" but it's a very summery color and I should probably stop in the fall. I only spend real money on lipstick b/c cheaper brands can't get the colors right.
