Gil
What are some activities that a "family" can do on an evening out? I've began spending some time with a single mom. I'm trying to find something that the whole pack of us (me + her + my brats + her kids) can do on an evening out but I have no good ideas.... It'll be 2 adults and 4 kids, ages 4, 8, 8 and
Gil
We've vetoed the movies because there isn't anything worth seeing right now and it'll be really expensive to see a mediocre film.

Ottakee
What is weather like by you? We do family hikes/walks quite often.
JFSinIL
Is the public library open in the evening?
Anne in CA
This time of year a lot of schools and churches are having inexpensive Christmas theater, that would be where I would start. Walks and hikes are such a good way to get everyone out cheaply. In Portland the Zoo lights were very fun at Christmas, but not cheap. This is a great time of year to find fun things for groups to do, though. Coffee shops with good music are another fun group activity that can be inexpensive, if everyone can be adventurous with their music.
alisoncooks
We like to go to the big chain PetStores and watch the animals play. Barnes & Noble - we can spend lots of time in there, sipping a sweet drink and perusing books.

Chris in VA
I'd be more inclined to do something during the day than at night.
carriede
Pizza and board games? Eta, that's not an outing, oops. Edited December 11, 2015 by carriede
Southern Ivy
Miniature golf, bowling, Chucky Cheese or something similar, looking at Christmas lights, have a scavenger hunt, have a backwards progressive dinner (dessert, a light entree, some appetizers), go see a community theater play? (not sure how much those are now days)
JonesinIndiana
Tour local Christmas lights with a picnic basket of hot chocolate, Christmas cookies and caroles playing on the radio/CD player.
MooCow
Play board games (having "teams" was always fun). Make homemade pizza. Teach them a card game and play it, watch a DVD with popcorn, play soccer or football at the park. Lego building contest, do a craft together
RioSamba
There are so many great suggestions, here. Mini Golf is always a hit. Depending upon the children, stargazing is fun. The Geminids are peaking soon.

happypamama
Planetarium? Or bundle up, pack thermoses of hot chocolate, and take a stargazing app to a mountain? Museum? Nature center? Indoor place like Cabela's where they have a target shooting gallery, aquariums, and animal displays? I'd be looking for daytime activities as well. In my area, we could do the Gettysburg Battlefields (you and your boys could pack a picnic lunch), tour a gazillion historic sites, visit the various displays at the Army War College (four little boys at my house -- they like cannons), fly kites, hike. . . KungFuPanda
Geocaching can be a lot of fun if you have a GPS or one on your smart phone. If you want to skip needing a gps, and stay on public trails, you can look into Letterboxing.
Rachel
Laser tag, bowling, pizza place with arcade games, trampoline place, roller skating, ice skating, plays, frozen yogurt bar. Look on groupon for deals. Also a lot of places have a family night or family deals. Our bowling alley has a $25 deal that includes a pizza, shoes, pitcher of soda, and an hour of bowling. It's cheaper than shoes and two games for all our family members and an hour is about all my kids last anyway.
