klmama
Which would be better for someone with finicky joints who needs to lose weight and work on flexibility, yoga or tai chi?
Slache
I've recently begun a tai chi course and I love, Love, LOVE it! And I hate yoga. Big time. Based on your OP I think yoga would be a better fit. If you hate it try tai chi. :)
livetoread
I've dabbled in yoga and I'd like to try it again, but I have loose joints and overstretch too easily, so I have to be careful. I'm doing tai chi now and like it. My dh is taking it with me and I enjoy doing the forms with him and with our class. I'm a terrible dancer, but I imagine it's a similar feeling of community with everyone moving in synch. I find it very soothing.
dirty ethel rackham
I resisted the yoga bandwagon for ages, until I met a teacher who loves to work with people who have all sorts of aches and pains. She finds out what everyone's issues are and works with us to break things down and make it work for our bodies. I tried tai chi, but with my knee and ankle problems, it was an exercise in frustration and pain.
Junie
I love Tai Chi. I have done this on and off since I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. My wrist joints are really bad, so I couldn't do most of the yoga postures. ETA: Tai Chi is really good for range of motion, but I don't know how effective it is for weight loss. I found that water aerobics was good for weight loss and easy on the joints. My workouts (when I can get it scheduled) include Tai Chi on some days and water aerobics on others. Happy
I love yoga! Used it to help recover from radiation and chemo. Makes my back feel great. I suggest you go to a gently class locally so the teacher can help you learn various poses. Just watching a video or streaming is not as good because no corrections can be offered for your specific situation. Once you know a few things you can practice more at home using those media. Love yoga...it makes me feel loose and refreshed, strong and healthy.
