Question - has anyone used a 2nd opinion remote service (medical)

We've been with the same ped neuro for 7 or so years and I'd like a 2nd opinion.

Learned that Boston Children's Hospital is ranked 1 by USNWR in the neurology field.

We have no family nor friends in the area.  While we could drive it and willing to spend the money b/c it's for dd's health/future I'm entertaining getting a 2nd opinion.

I just spoke with them and they do offer 2nd opinions for around $600.  I would fill out their paperwork on line and be given a "care coordinator".  This person sets up the preliminary process of gathering info. and assigns us to a ped neuro specific to my dd's needs.  It takes about 10 business days and the dr. will call me to discuss.  I do not know the length of time this dr. will allow on phone but "cc" should know the window.

Ranked 2 is a hospital in TX, John Hopkins and so on.

Cincinnati and Columbus are ranked in the top 10 and 8 hours away.   I could stay with family in southeast Ohio.  From there house to Cincinnati is 2 1/2 hours and their house to Columbus is 1 1/4 hours.

The cost would probably shake out to be the same.  Driving would involve gas, tolls, food, misc.

Remote apt would be $600.

Have any of you gone this route?  Would you recommend it?  Which scenario?

hellen, we are seeking another opinion for the assessment and conclusion.

ottakee, it's very far, but my sister lives near Detroit so we could stay with her.

I just had a second opinion yesterday. The assessment was more thorough and led to a different conclusion. That couldn't have happened if they were just reviewing medical records. I went to one of the top specialists in the country for the second opinion. They definitely did a more thorough job.

wow, hellen, that is good it was so productive.  the medical staff that I seek for my dd's 2nd opinion is also tops in the country.   US News and World Report ranked them #1 with a score of 100% - Boston Children's Hospital.  The ranking/score is for the ped neurology dept.

From what I understand the remote 2nd opinion is a starting point many times.  Records would be sent from local dr. to Boston dr.  Boston dr. would review/assessment, conclusion and suggestions.  Now those suggestions may be same or vary greatly from the local one.  Maybe the Boston dr. would want their own eeg scheduled.  Their own tests, labs, etc.

At dinner I talked with dh about getting another opinion locally (another local dr.) AND from the Boston team.

They reviewed my records before scheduling an appointment with me. They are in the process of reviewing my MRI.

It wasn't completely productive. I didn't agree with the initial diagnosis. They confirmed that I was right but I still don't know what is wrong. Maybe I'll have more information after the MRI review.
