Hikin' Mama
My son was driving home from college and his car broke down. He is having it towed and can take a bus to Portland, arriving at 5:10 a.m. Thursday morning. What is the best way to get from the Greyhound station to the airport? Is it even safe at the Greyhound station at 5 a.m.? Thank you!
Starr
I think it's on the MAX light rail that goes to airport starting very early . Google about

Jean in Newcastle
The station is in an area with a lot of homeless who are panhandling. I don't know if they would be too active that early though. He should be fine with normal street smarts (don't flash money, look like you know where you're going). The airport is on the red line for Max. But you will need to check to see if the red line goes right from the Greyhound station or if he needs to change.
Bocky
Looked this up on the trimet trip planner for the MAX. They think his best bet is to walk six short city blocks (about a third of a mile) from the Greyhound Station to the nearest MAX red line stop. The red line goes to the airport and is running tomorrow morning at that time. The MAX green line stops right outside the Greyhound Station, and he could transfer to the red line, but it looks like it is not running until after 7 am tomorrow. This is not a good area of town. I asked dh about this as he walks to the train (not there, but in the city) each day for work at 6:00am. His experience is that things are very quiet at that time, and he would do the walk, though his first preference would definitely be to take the green line and transfer. How early is your son's flight?
InterestingCase
Years ago, I remember reading that 5-6 a.m. was especially dangerous in this part of town due to police shifts changing over. It could be that this has been dealt with by now, This being said, I did have to drop my son off down there very early in the morning a few years ago when he was traveling to and from Eugene regularly. We did just fine. Can he manage cab fare?

Hikin' Mama
I appreciate all your replies! This board is so giving. He changed plans and decided to just take the bus clear back to his college town, where he will arrive later this morning. His friend's family is in town (his college town), so he will spend Thanksgiving with them. He was planning on leaving our house to go back to college on Saturday anyway, and he decided he was going to have too little time at home to make the expense worth it. The airport is a 1.5 hour drive each way from our house, which we were perfectly willing to do, but he wouldn't have been home until this afternoon and then had to leave again Sat. morning. I am very thankful for the kindness of strangers today. A man at the dealership his car was towed to let him print his bus ticket out there and then gave him a ride to where the bus stops, which was 6.5 miles away. Son was just going to walk there, down the freeway, in the dark. : / He is the adventurous type though. He is lamenting the fact that he now has to pay to do his laundry, as he had it all packed in his car to bring home. Ha ha!
MEmama
Sorry you'll have to miss your boy this holiday. :(. Sounds like he made a mature decision and will be in good hands!
