Carpe Diem
Hi! How does my daughter know if her recommender have uploaded their letter? Also, can we upload a letter for someone who wrote a letter for another college app but doesn't have time to do this step? Thanks!
justkeepswimming
On the Common App? It shows the recommender's progress - iirc, it changes to "started" and then to "uploaded" or something like that. You can see this for each university in the recommender's section. As far as doing that part for someone... I don't think there's a way other than mailing the letter(s) yourself to the Admission's Office(s)... the recommender has to set up his/her own account in order to upload the letter, you can't do it from the student side. teachermom2834
On the common app you can click on "manage recommenders" on the upper right corner of one of the screens. (can't remember if it is the dashboard or the "my colleges" screen). From there it will say "invited" or "started" or "submitted". When a college actually goes and retrieves it , the status will be "downloaded". At least that has been our experience. Not sure about adding a letter yourself. I don't believe that is possible from the common app but I didn't have that issue.
Joules
If you put a recommender on the Common App with no e-mail address, it will assume that that recommendation will come by mail. The college will know to look for it in the mail. You'll need to look up or ask for the address that each college wants paper documentation mailed to. Then your recommender can send the letter without getting a common app account. Common App does provide the pdf of a form that the recommender is supposed to fill out when it comes by mail. We had one recommender that didn't want to bother with that. He just put ds's common app id and birthdate on the letter and mailed it. The college has it as received on their status page. I don't yet know if it will make a difference that it doesn't have the form.
plansrme
Just wanted to say thanks for posting this. My daughter is applying to a whopping one college. She is a pretty much a shoo-in for admission but would like to be considered for scholarships. The recommendation is optional, but she had one lined up from a long-time professor at the school. I asked her to check up on it, and there is nothing there. She is not sure who goofed--probably her. Last night, she sent an apologetic email to the head of the department and asked if he could get a letter in for her by Monday in hopes that she would be considered for merit scholarships. He just paid her a huge compliment yesterday (so huge that I am embarrassed to repeat it), so it was really good timing to be asking for a recommendation! It is possible that the original professor mailed it in but more likely that he never got the CA email about setting up an account. Anyway, thanks for mentioning this. I had zero to do with her CA but think it was a good thing she checked.

I had zero to do with her CA but think it was a good thing she checked. My dd is in the same place - don't think she'll be applying to more than the one school, where she's almost sure to get in, but it would be nice to get some scholarships. .. she's been dragging her feet a bit about making sure her recommendations are in - they are optional at this school, but I've been trying to explain that it's the extras that might help with a scholarship. Looks like both finally got in today! (The EA app was due back Nov 15th, but since the recs were optional...) She actually never did the CA, though; this school doesn't even accept it... so I didn't have to write the dreaded counselor letter after all! If she suddenly decides to apply to any other schools, I'll have to scramble (although if it's only one or two, I'll probably encourage her to just apply individually)
