Halcyon
Hi-i am looking for a java programming course for my son that is self paced, hopefully with a video component and 'assignments'. I know of Purdue but their window has already closed. thanks in advance!
MomsintheGarden
TeenCoder Java has videos for purchase. Three of our dc have used it, and we've been quite pleased with the program. They did not use the videos, only the text. That said, some students need extra help getting through the course, and most still need fairly extensive prep for the AP exam if they have that as a goal.
MarkT
one here https://www.edx.org/high-school-initiative started yesterday but you should be able to get in https://www.edx.org/course/introduction-programming-java-part-1-uc3mx-it-1-1x-0 Has he done Python already? If not I recommend that first.

Sebastian (a lady)
This is the company that used to be Amplify. Enrollment for students is free. If you want coach's access and the solutions manual for assignments, there is a per student fee. https://edhesive.com/courses/apcs_java The assignments last year were done in Dr Java and then uploaded to the site for assessment. We had computer problems, so ds just kept everything in Dr Java. Joining now and self pacing through earlier lessons would be no problem. If he takes more than one year, you might run into a problem with the lessons he needs not yet being open because the course has wrapped back around to the new year. However, there are also some B&M schools that do this course as a two year course or in block schedules, so they may have a solution already. I found that they were really responsive to questions. (In fact I had multiple phone conversations with their representative last year when I was considering the class and later when I had a question about AP documentation.) This page has a pdf of the course syllabus. https://course.edhesive.com/unit?unit=1&lesson=3 Edited November 19, 2015 by Sebastian (a lady)
shawthorne44
CodeAcademy.com. Totally free and online. It talks you through assignments and then use see the results instantly. I wouldn't use it as a credit for a required course. But, it would make an excellent prep for another Java course because you would have the basics and the framework covered, or for when you just need to get something done. At work we recommend it to customers who want to do some scripting.

My son is also using Edhesive's AP Computer Science and has really enjoyed it so far. He is just using the free version of the class, and he seems to go through the lessons and assignments fairly quickly. Are any of you using the paid "coach support" option with additional assignments? If so, is it worth the cost? Also, we started the course without really thinking through the whole AP approval process. Do I need to set up an account on the College Board AP Course Audit page? If so, do I just submit a copy of Edhesive's syllabus or is there a special number that I put in for them? Thanks, Kathy

Thanks, Kathy Last year I contacted Amplify and they sent me a copy of their CB approval letter for my records. This should be easy for them this year, since they probably just renewed last year's syllabus. They have been pretty quick with customer responsiveness. The only issue is that they might not send the letter out for students who are not using the coach option. But I would go ahead and ask. We did find the coach info to be helpful. I liked that it had hard copies of all of the quizzes. This doubled the amount of practice material. I tended to print out the written quiz for ds to use before taking the online version. I also appreciated that there were sample solutions to assignments. I had ds review the solutions after he'd done an assignment. Often the book solution was a more elegant way of meeting the goal of the assignment, so it helped to see how they'd done it.
