WWE narrations

I'm working through WWE1 with my dd7, and I have a few questions about how others complete the narrations.

Currently I read the passage and she answers the questions. When we get to the end, the prompt for narration is, "What is one thing you remember about the passage?". She usually comes up with something funny that she remembers or just ANY random piece of information from the passage. I should note that she does not have trouble coming up with something to say and could go on and on for at least a paragraph of information.

BUT, I wonder if I shouldn't encourage her to find a main idea instead of just a random piece of information. ?? From what I understand, the goal of the narrations is a stepping stone to writing the information down on her own. Should I make her work harder to come up with the main idea or just keep going with 'one thing you remember'?

Maybe somebody could elaborate on how this fits into the overall curriculum since we're only on Level 1. Will the narrations gradually transition to establishing the main idea, then writing it themselves?

I agree with the PPs, but I feel your pain. "Tell me something you remember" seems like a ridiculous question after she has just enthusiastically and with great verbosity answered all the comprehension questions. I've started to ask, "Tell me one good sentence about the story." Subtle, but it occasionally gets us talking about what makes a good sentence.

I think you would be fine asking for the main point of stories that are suited for that, just don't get worked up if she picks something different.

Yes, they take pride in remembering the funniest thing, don't they.

Let her. It's so totally fine, and she is 7.  Hey, she is listening and participating!  If you want, you can ask her to make a picture of what she remembers, then have her dictate her description to you and you put it in her history binder.  In a few years from now, you will love them!

ps: we did science for a whole year that way and it was So GOOD for my littles.  We read a page from whatever the science encyclopedia thing-y was about animals. Then I asked what they remembered, then I asked for a picture. We labeled it and I put it in a notebook.  They thought this was heaven!  It was perfect for the long dark winter, when we couldn't get outside to dig in the dirt and plant peas and radishes.

Where is this lecture?

I think the reference is to this:

http://peacehillpress.com/p/a-plan-for-teaching-writing-focus-on-the-elementary-grades-mp3-download/

I've listened before, but now I'm going to listen again tonight. Apparently I need a refresher!

Thanks, all! I'm glad to know that the narrations progress toward providing the main idea. I'm always trying to strike that balance between too easy and too challenging. FLL and WWE start out very gentle, which I'm ok with because I know someday it won't be so easy. Telling myself that again today.

My daughter is 2nd grade (8 in two weeks) and we are also working through WWE 1.  This is her first exposure to formal narration and just in the past month she has started giving me more "main idea" sentences instead of the funniest or most interesting thing in her mind. I'm sure it'll happen for your DD eventually also.

Same. 2nd grade, 8 in 4 weeks! So I guess I'm right in thinking that she's capable. The trick will be gently nudging or letting it be for now.  :D

My first grader very quickly figured out that this answer would have to be copied, so he give the shortest sentence possible!

LOL my dd will start on a big long description and then stop and say, "Wait. Am I going to have to copy this?" hahahaha. If she narrates a lot, I will only write down one sentence for her to copy. I don't want to punish her because I think the actual narration is more important than the copy work.

ugh 3.99 are you kidding me???  I seriously have an issue with SWB sometimes.  I understand she has to make a living, but really honestly, alot of her work is just regurgitation of works that have been published and used for a hundred years.  Like her book regarding classical education for yourself.  Just a rewrite of how to read a book..... GIve this lecture away for free.  We are buying your stuff already!

PS.  Im an academic, with a science PhD.  SWB is an academic teaching at a college.  Share your information.  Its called a seminar.

Wow.  I do not agree.  I have found the lectures very worth the money.  If it helps, there are sometimes coupons or sales.

No. It is work that is separate from her work at the college. She gets paid for her seminars she gives at the college by her employer. Why should she not get paid for her other work?

My dh gets paid by his university for his work. If he gets asked to come an lecture elsewhere he gets paid to do so, and gets put up at a very nice hotel, taken out to dinner etc. It is time away from his full time job and his family and he expects to get paid for it.

Why do you feel entitled to get something for free?  If you don't find value in it, then fine. Vote with your wallet and don't buy it. But, don't fault someone else for trying to earn a living.

Oh i will vote with my wallet and not buy it.  I just see her as trying to get an inch more when she already has a mile....  Hey its my opinion.  You guys are free to have yours, this is the way I see it.  Maybe because I have taught both high school and college, but I certainly was never paid for so much time and effort I put into my job.  As an adjunct, we get paid peanuts.  As a high school teacher, well we all know how this country treats public school teachers.

Again why ask for a bit more from the same people that are shelling out hundreds for your other materials.  To me, it sounds greedy, not trying to make a living.

  Yes, she is taking a treasure bath with the profits of her vast homeschooling empire!

Some of those 'hundreds' help keep this very message board up and running.  Is that greedy as well?  If the bills don't get paid, then where will you go to complain?

oh im sure peace hill press is taking some profit too.  Plus SWB has a fulltime job already.

honestly, just think about it a minute.  3.99 for a lecture to help out the patrons to use her books.  HarperCollins, and other book publishers are now offering free chapters online as supplements to garner more interest.

I see this as just being a bit more greedy.  Peace Hill Press and SWB would be wise to offer this lecture for free.  IT will garner interest in her works and ultimately improve profits rather than appear as greedy, penny-pinchers.

I see both sides of this. Yes, others offer this type of resource for free. But, what if she doesn't NEED to garner interest?

At the end of the day, I pay the $3.99 because it's worth it to me. It's an 1 hour, 20 min seminar that I've listened to at least 3 times and will probably listen to again.

But if it is earning so much money, if people are willing to "shell out hundreds" for materials...then it sounds to me like she isn't have any trouble garnering interest in her works, right? Why should she give away product for free if people are willing to pay for it?

I am assuming that you also think that she and the other people who participated in the 'virtual conference' should just give away their time for free?  There was fair number of free lectures, but many were a paid download. Should those be free as well?  They were mostly by other homeschool curriculum writers, such as Bernard Nebel and Richard Rusczyk.  Are they also being greedy?

I am just trying to follow your logic here.. so if someone works in education, like a university, she isn't supposed to earn money from other sources of income.  So, someone is an adjunct teacher she shouldn't get money for publishing? Or is it the publishing of a book that is the  problem?  So if someone publishes a book then she shouldn't earn money if she is asked to lecture on the book?  What about travel expenses, are those ok? Or is she expected to shell those out herself as well?

I am just trying to figure out what the rules are.  Where does 'earning a living' become 'being greedy' according to you?

I have never thought about it but when I have had salaried positions I was expected to only work for my employer unless given permission.  Also in science your employer has claim to any work you do in your field in your own time.  So strictly speaking it is probably a conflict of interest for her to work for an educational organisation and produce educational materials but I imagine her employer knows and doesn't object.

Richard from AOPS did one of the free talks so unless The Well Trained Mind Academy paid him it was giving his own time and knowledge.
