Common App Essay Optional

So one of the colleges ds is applying to does not require the essay, but recommends it for scholarships and the honors program.  It says the same for the letter of recommendation.  But the letter of recommendation section doesn't show up and we can't find a place to choose to submit the optional essay.  It seems like there should just be a check box, but I'm not seeing it.

Has anyone else opted to send the essay when it was optional?  Any chance you remember how you did it?

If you post the school name people might be able to help.

When you are logged in as the student the CA essay is part of the general application. Some schools have optional essays that either show up in the college's questions section or in the college writing supplement section for that school.

I didn't realize that it was possible to complete the CA without doing the CA essay.

Georgia State University http://admissions.gsu.edu/how-do-i-apply/common-application/ I'm looking at the Holistic Review section.

The Common App lists it as a no essay school.  Now I'm wondering if the check box I am looking for will show up at the end when he submits.  He is working on the college specific sections of the application now, so we can't play with the submit section yet.  On the FERPA page, there is no box for letters of recommendation like the other colleges, but maybe that will show up at the end, too.

If no one has experience, I'll post back when we figure it out!

Keep in mind, Optional Essays are NEVER really optional!  We went to a parent meeting and the Guidance Counselor for the local high school told us this.  We visited a college (large State university) this past weekend for their Open House, and the Director of Admissions did a presentation.  She said the SAME thing.  If a college offers an Optional Essay....they expect you to write SOMETHING.  Those who don't better have PERFECT scores and amazing community service to counteract the lack of doing the essay...and if they have all that...why didn't they do the essay?   Those were her words.
