Sally Day
My youngest has spent the last 2 years hearing his brother learning the poems in FLL by heart. He's just started the first book himself and obviously has a head start on them! Just wondering what others have done in this situation? Did you substitute other material?
Angie in VA
I wouldn't sub material. I'd add material. This happens a lot. I've seen it w/ siblings' playing musical instruments. The youngers have the advantage of hearing pieces played in their home and they often advance through the repetoire more quickly.
carriede
Yep. My DD4 now knows the definition of a noun.
momacacia
Yeah, I feel bad for oldest. How firstborns stereotypically accomplish what they do, I don't know. If homeschooling doesn't kill me between now and then, my 3rd and 4th borns will get amazing educations.
Cake and Pi
Admittedly, we don't do any of the extra writing activities in FLL, but I wouldn't think it would matter much if one were to skip FLL1, assuming definitions and poems are memorized? We're actually not there yet, but I'm considering having my DS#3 go straight into FLL2 when the time comes to start formal school with him. I don't know. We'll have to see how much of it sticks. Thus far he's memorized all the poems and definitions right along with DS#1 and DS#2 that we've done in FLL1, and I just don't see the point in going over it all again? Maybe a couple weeks reviewing the concepts and refreshing memory on the poems from 1 and then moving to 2?
Kiara.I
I keep telling my oldest that due to his work, his younger sibs will be ahead of where he was at the same age, because they had the advantage of hearing his lessons. It's just one of the things about being the oldest, and accepting it makes it easier. Yeah, I'd just add more poems, probably. Are you still doing poetry memorization with the older? Well, the younger can join in on that, too!
kalusignan
My youngest memorized The Caterpillar when she was 2 years old and continues to surprised us all by reciting various poems randomly. I think there is enough of an age difference (4 years) that she may forget a lot before she starts FLL1 in 3 years. If not, I will definitely up the challenge by adding more poems!
