mom31257
Would you all mind to help me brainstorm? I need to come up with some ideas for a 30 minute class, meeting only 8 weeks, that is for middle school and high school students. It needs to be something fun and very social in nature. Thanks! mschickie
Gym classes like Dodgeball or Ultimate Frisbee are normally popular. A class on games could be fun. It is hard for high school since most times they are looking for more academic based classes. An arts and crafts class could be fun too.
mom31257
We don't have a gym at the church, but there is a good sized fellowship hall. Some days a class like square dancing would require us to move a lot of tables and chairs. I'll have to think on that. Thanks for the ideas! Keep them coming. Kuovonne
poetry? speech? building challenges (e.g. how tall can you make a stack of index cards balanced on their edges?, how far can that paper airplane fly? how can you cushion the egg so it doesn't break when you drop it?) These building challenges are fun, quick, and cheap. You can expand on the lessons to teach physics concepts. Put the kids in groups for experience working in teams.
mschickie
Ok I did one for little kids but I bet you could adapt it for middle and high school kids if you are just looking for a fun elective. We did a Celebrations class. I have a big book on Celebrations, such as National Chocolate Day, National Wear your Hat backwards day, So and So's birthday, special events...http://www.amazon.com/Celebrations-Holidays-Different-Remember-stretchers/dp/0865300321/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1447251366&sr=1-1&keywords=celebrations+marjorie+frank&pebp=1447251369849&perid=0B0QBTGGKJYM640TDSHJ What you could do is some sort of activity based on that particular day. This way there is a lot of variety in the class. Other ideas might be a drama/improv class or a debate class.
laughing lioness
The Grammar of Poetry, re-published by Roman Roads Media- you could focus on just Iambic and a trope or two and then do recitations from Verily, A New Hope.
